for dvd i use the nvidia dvd decoder and there is an option to correct aspect ratio in the settings. for divx playback you can try to use ffdshow to adjust the ratio or I use a program called DivXG400 2.8. with these tools basically you can streatch the video overlay vertically.
The issue most of the time is that the DVD itself has black bars on top/bottom that prevent RR from resizing correctly.. you shou try different zoom modes by pressing the "EYE" button.. if that doesn't solve it, then it's time to try some hardware approach..
Is this what the 848x480 and 800x600 selections are for in the config program? I haven't noticed any difference in the screens I use with either setting. I have a Xenarc 7" which confuses me: it has a physical 16:9 aspect but display is set to 800x600. I never know which to choose in the software to keep the aspect looking right.

RRConfig should be set with the PHYSICAL aspect ratio.. RR will propperly compensate for the resolution you use. The problem is that videos that are NOT propperly cut will play as if any black borders are part of the video -- which will most likely mess up the display. There's a "CUT" zoom mode to try and compensate for that, but it still depends on the video.
