wouldnt the only thing needed for dual support is a skin made for dual monitors?

I read about a concept that was devised using a "dual-monitor" skin (ie., instead of running at 800x600 it would be designed as 1600x600 or 800x1200 but I never saw anything more about it. In theory it would work but one of the things that would become an issue is the fact that some elements can only be shown once per screen such as the VISU and video window. Guino would have to add support to be able to show these elements more than once on a given screen. This is pretty much what stopped me from looking more into a double sized skin.

A double skin is cool, but limitations as you said exist... I explored this issue a while back, and the main problem isnt even that the "element" can only be displayed once. Worse than this, Visu, GPS, etc are EXTERNAL APPS....they arent just an image displayed or a stream played... It is practically impossible to reproduce them/run them twice in a "slave" state (most programs dont have this functionality)...

One possible, inefficient, workaround would be "screen cloning" a part of the screen onto another part (further off the main monitor, on the "extended" skin area)...

Some things like GPS in fron, Video in back should be possible sooner though, when Aranthrarnar releases his mods. Video in back control in front, Music name in back, stats in back, etc, already work, but the problem is with "apps"... (GPS in front with menu, GPS in back fullscreen, for example is where the problems lie)

All very interesting points, but I think the thing that everyone is missing is the hardware alternatives. You can pick up a VGA splitter adapter for a $1.00 and I have seen 7" Non touch VGA screens for as low as $108.00 on ebay. Then just simply connect all of your monitors to your computer and every monitor will display the same thing.

Here is another alternative hardware configuration, for those of us who have an open pci slot, just add a 2nd video card. Windows XP supports multiple video cards and multiple display configurations. With 2 video cards, it makes the primary screen function normally one the primary agp video card, but if you move the mouse to the right, you will see the pointer appear on the next monitor as it dissappears from the first monitor on the pci video card. This will enable the user to place what they want and on which monitor.

Here is a third hardware alternative; Some of the higher end video cards come with a combination VGA and RCA/S-Video port that can be enabled at the same time, so you can display VGA video to a nice touch screen or your preferrence then show the same display on your standard less expensive lcd monitors.

I am currently working on this on my next version of Mobile Impact on the DVD player module, where upon clicking a button, it moves the playing movie to the 2nd screen, then if you hit the button again, it will return to the first screen. This is for an application like a limousine or minivan or something where you can set the movie to play on the back screen for your guests or kids.

So really if you think about it, this covers pretty much every aspect of doing multiple screens, where there really is very little coding required.

we are after a software based solution.

there are many ways of doing it. either extend the program width etc to both screens and skin / program rest

or create a nother program to run in dual so that one for each monitor. eg. host and client.

                    host is road runner
                    client is video/visuals/dvd etc

reddeath, the hardwae is very trivial... like you say you can use a splitter (pretty lame imho), or you can do a second card, with extended desktop (which is exactly what a 1600x800 skin idea is)...

Your solution although an intermediate still wont allow video on all screens will it?

So if your client had a limo with a plasma in the rear and a screen in the guest area, how would you have video on only one, or on both (software switchable of course, no hardware change such as a Video switch)...

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=59794 check post #3. Video playing full screen on rear, and thumbnail in front!

centrafuse has started it, now we must beat it! Dual-displaying of GPS maps somehow... I wonder if one could potentially load 2 Destinator windows, with the same map, same gps data, etc (or one window "fed" from another), but it prolly wont work... I know destinator sdk doesnt load 2 apps at once...

it still is only a carpc...... that suggestions makes absolutely no practical sense imho, so I will regard it as a joke...

The suggested split-zone display support is actually extremely useful in the car.... so it isnt stupid like a Xeon server in the car, or a 5000w inverter powering 10 networked PCs....

I mean maybe you could get a decently sized cluster with 2 nano boards, but just so much waste, 2 hds, 2 memory, etc just to drive a backseat display???
