  • Where to start...

Hi all. New to this skinning stuff. I need some help.
    I've looked through this tutorial:
    http://venus.walagata.com/w/j187/How_To_Skin.ppt
    Im using RRSkinEditor

I've played around with some other peeps skins to get the feel of how to modify them its just overwhelming and whatnot. When it comes around to making a fresh skin I must be missing something. I need a couple tips.
Followed all the directions in the Tutorial and made a simple one button skin just to see if the button works, but when i try to load it into RR it says that its not a valid skin file.

    Here's what i think i could use:
    1. Simple basic, maybe 4-6 button skin that does not have a bunch of stuff. Just something to get me started and an idea of what im doing wrong. Mostly just some thing to compare and reference other than the completed ones that are, like i said overwhelming.
    2. a link to a small simple skin that is like the one i described above.

I know what your thinkin... darn NOOBS,lol.

    Thanks in advance.

IF you want to play around with skins, the best suggestion is to COPY an existing WORKING skin onto another folder and start making changes to it, then replacing screen by screen with whatever you want. You most likely didn't create a general.ini file which is required.

      I didn't create a general.ini

RRSkinEditor creates one for you doesn't it?

The only thing that I noticed is that the skin file should have 3 lines in the begining(?), or at least all the ones that I have seen/played do...ie:

          MEDIACAR Skin
          MEDIACAR Alpine"Contacts" skin
          CONTACTS_OFF.jpg,CONTACTS_OFF.jpg,CONTACTS_ON.jpg, CONTACTS_DOWN.jpg

hopefully someone that is more into skinning/modifing will point ya in the right direction

            Hi Rosebud6.

just like guino said; download a skin you like, copy it to a new directory and start playing around with SkinEditor and your Notepad. It's not that hard. It does take a lot of time to gather all information. Most of the documents are up to date C:\Program Files\Road Runner\*.txt. Other information is around this forum somewhere. How do I start?

First off all I make a design in Photoshop. I export the images of the first screen. This contains normaly the startup screen. I make at least 2 buttons, audioplayer (next to build screen) and skins (to switch/reload skin). This first screen could be basic for a lot of screens (e.g. player buttons) these buttons, play, stop, ff wind and so on.. I copy with notepad to the audioplayer screen. this way I know these buttons are exactly the same size height....and so on.

Biggest tip I got for you.. stealing..
Download a lot of skins and learn from others :P
