  • shuffle videos in RR

As I am fairly new in posting here, I should first thank everyone for keeping alive the ultimate resource for carputer hobbyists. I have found answers for all my questions without ever posting it (you've all been there - done that). I absolutely love RoadRunner, as a software and as a concept (open source) - thanks guino!

Now like some others here, I pretty much listen to music nowadays only in the form of music videos. But, I missed having the shuffle option in the video playlist (my list is huge - more than 1500) going from CF to RR.

I later found the "videoshuflfe" option and used that, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted as it would shuffle once and load the shuffled playlist to later browse. I wanted it like the audio playlist shuffle, where the list stays ordered when you view, but you just randomly jump all over the list. This gives you the advantage of switching back and forth (shuffle to nonshuffle). Let's say you are watching with shuffle on, and randomly hit an Aerosmith song - and you feel the urge to listen to another Aerosmith song (or even a Bon Jovi), you know you can pull the list up and find it exactly (assuming you have a sorted list of filenames of type "Artist - Song").

I started tweaking around guino's 7-8-06 build and have something like this working for me locally. If this would be of interest to others, I can build it and post a link to it. I am working on the BMV2 PSDs to add the shuffle option in the video_browser mode.

Please get the changes to Guino so that he can add the feature to the next official release. I know plenty of people (including myself) would love to see this feature added.

In the mean time, post your build exe file up here so that we can test it out

I will try to clean up the changes I did and post it in a day or two. I am not shufflying a "playlist" as such, but what RR reads and builds from the video path. This would be the videos.m3u file - I am just changing RR to move randomly within the videos.m3u list instead of going +1 for down and -1 for up.

I've been collecting videos for the last 8 years. Most of them are recorded from MTV using a TV Tuner card. Some of them are of the indie kind and were downloaded from free and legal sites. The rest are indian movie music videos which you get from almost every movie DVD

I have a version you can try out. I am sure there are still bugs in it and you might see some crashes in situations, but it seemed to work mostly ok.

As I couldn't find a better place to upload, I am putting it on rapidshare.

              rr_shuffle2.zip

The zip file has the rr.exe with the changes, and the changed video_player skin and jpg files of BMV2 skin to go along with it. I switched out the ZOOM button for the Shuffle button as of now. You can easily add it to any skin by turning on the "videoshuffle" option.

              Some things to note:
              * I've only tried the mod with Video mode set to built in player - am not fully sure how it would affect external players.
              * This overrides the existing "videoshuffle" mode where the playlist would've got shuffled everytime you loaded. This mod on the other hand shuffles at playtime.
              * If you are in shuffle mode, and want to go back (up button) you can track the same random sequence in reverse for upto 20 songs.

I left the video_menu hiding code as it was in the 7-8-06 release. So you might want to add "transition=9" or similar to your rr.ini to have transitions turned on. For more info check here and here.

Can you tell me what happens? Would it just not randomize for you or were there other fatal problems before that?

I had tested this code on my desk machine and didn't have any problems there. When I tried it on my carputer it had problems playing the previous songs (it would pick something else - not in the previously shuffled order). I am out of town for a couple of days - but I think I know what the problem is, and have come up with a different implementation.

I am sure the code has issues, but I would like to work it out and once it gets stable see it integrated into RR. If you could help me out and tell me what issues you see, then I can work on fixing them. Thanks!

Ahh, I have tried it today again with my skin and "SHUFFLEVIDEO" code on a button and is just working fine.
So, nice new feature in RR.
                      Thanks a lot!

                        Thanks for trying it out!

I had a problem when coming back from hangs, the shuffler would be messed up until you reload the file list again. I have a fix for it - I am trying it ou - will post it by the weekend.

Sorry, there's been some crazy things going on at work.

I haven't tried the hacked version with PowerDVD. I doubt that it would work. I'll give it a shot and definitely try to get back workin on it ASAP.
