  • let's try to be effective...

    Hi all,

Since most of us have, or are working on having, a car PC in our vehicles I think effectiveness is something really dear to us.

So, I think it would be great to see a little more of that effectiveness in the
    forums.

For example, phonecontrol.net: a really amazing and usefull piece of software. Except that most of us had to learn freakin' programming to make it work. (Now I can open my own ITcom business after successfully configuring it!!!)
So, when someone figures out a way to set it up with this or that phone, this or that dongle, etc, etc... make sure it's really working, the links you're posting are active and when I'm looking for a driver for PhoCo don't tell me to google it and I'll find it 'cause I might be stupid but I don't need someone to tell me to look for something I'm already looking for!!!

    Also, SKINS!
Please!!! when you post a skin could you add to your post a list of the features that are working/not working on it because it's frustrating to get a beautifull looking skin with a (for example) phone button that doesn't work. I know what you're gonna say, go in the code and set it up yourself... well, I don't know how to do that, which is the reason why I'm not posting skins!

Well I guess you get my point and don't go angry mob on me
I'm just trying to suggest a few things that could make the completion of anyone's dream car PC a little faster and easier.

    Cheers all!

well as far as phoco goes, there is an entire subform for Phoco setup, it even has its own form site for support issues from the developer, both of which have tons of info on issues and seting up your phone. RR forum really isnt the place for figureing out how to get your phone to work.
If your RR Skin has .skin files for phoco and you set the path to phoco in RRConfig.exe thats all you need to do as far as RR is concerned, but your phone needs to already be working with phoco standalone first.

As for skins etc, well i can understand your beef, esp if you dont know how to fix the skin to make something work or skins that dont have a skinbrowser so you have to use RRConfig to change the skin (i hate that).
Personally every button in my skin does what it says on the box and theres no guessing if something is supported or not, WYSIWYG.

On the same note though, i would bet that most new users rarely read enough post in the skins thread and most people just grab the downloads and try to figure it out instead of reading. I know this is mostly somewhat true because even after i write extensive step by steps and readme's ect for my skin, people still ask the same questions over and over and i hate to be sterotypical (i realy do) but its usualy those with low post counts or too lazy to move there eyes left/right for extended periods of time. Not directing that to you though.
I would say the average skin does include a list of what features are supported etc, usualy the guys newer to skinning maybe not but give those guys a break.

When in doubt, just post and ask what features are supported. Im sure you'll get a reply saying what works and what dosent. Even if someone says to search, if you still cant find it, post again. But be polite and Someone will help you.

You are right, it would be nice to know what is and isn't working in a skin, though that changes quite often, as Skins are developed and finished. These are not "commercial" releases, they are done by people on the board. Most often because they want a special skin for themselves, and since Skin Maker A doesn't use PhoCo, he won't make a PhoCo skin, or an XM skin, etc.. It would be nice to know this in advance. In fact, all you need to do to find out is DL the skin, and look at the files in the skin. Does it have XM, does it have PhoCo? Then you know.

I'd also like to add, if you want a product that will work out of the box, with out any setup, or minimal setup, and that RR and the Skins requires too much work to setup, then please look at purchasing a Commercial product like streetdeck.

RR, and for the most parts, the "hobby" of carputing isn't for the person who just wants to buy something, have it work, and be done with it. That just isn't what this is about. That is mostly because what you and I need out of our computers, and the different options and hardware that you and I are using, are MOST LIKELY different. Additionally, the button for your phone may not work because your path is different then my path to the PhoCo program. Because my carputer and your carputer are setup differently. Luckily for people like you who want that completely setup, nothing to do setup, the "hobby" has progressed to a point where there are several commercial options for both complete built carputers and Front End software.

Basically, it boils down to, Either pay or learn to do it yourself.

                      Michael,

I didn't want to come out agro and "I don't feel like figuring it out myself why don't you guys do it for me...chop, chop!!!"

I was just saying a little more clarity in SOME of the posts out there would be a huge improvement when someone is looking for or wondering something and is trying to figure it out by himself without a whole lotta knowledge on the subject (and my guess is this applies to a lot of people in these forums.)

Concerning PhoCo: I figured it out by myself ( thanks to finally getting my hands on the latest widcomm driver (5.0 or something)) and since I'm trying to hook it up to a V3...it was a real pain. Now it's "sort of perfectly" working when I use PhoCo as a stand alone. The new problem is RR doesn't seem to be controlling it (the path to the .exe file is correct, but nothing happens). If I launch PhoCo first, minimize it, and then lauch RR it's working if I'm making a call but if someone's calling, the Phoco window comes up (wich kinda downrushes the all front end thing!) and doesn't wanna pick up the call.
I guess that'll keep me busy the next couple of weekends!!!

For the "get a commercial front end" thing: I FREAKIN' WISH!!!!!!
Quickly, here's what I want with my carputer outside of the usual CD/DVD/MP3/Internet features: Phone control, Sirius radio, GPS/Nav.

                      And here's the problem:
Street Deck and Centrafuse don't have Sirius
Digital Dash (wich I think is one of the best one out there) doesn't
deal with any kind of phone control.

I'm telling you I tried every single one of the front end (commercial or not) I saw mentioned on the internet. The only one I found that gave me hope that one day I'll have Sirus and phone control as part of my Car PC is RR

So, since I'm nowhere close being any kind of programmer, that's why I'm trying to tell people to be clear and precise when talking about what they have as a set up (soft/hardware) or what they figured out so other people like me who don't know squat about coding can make it to...

                      And now...
back to " why the &#@% isn't RR workin' wit PhoCO!!!!!!!!!! "

                      Cheers all!
                      JP

                        @jeep642

On a motorola flip, I've had to leave the unit flipped open. If you set the phone up to answer when opened, then phoco will work. Also look at lengthy phoco thread from robby/sonic, in there you will see some downfalls to using motorola (single bluetooth connection). The audio bridge is a timing issue about 2 seconds to transfer to and then 6 seconds after the hangup to reload the communications port again after you initiate the "HSPDISCONNECT" in your phoco skin, also add the "RESUME_PHOCO" command for ease of when the phone/phoco doesn't sync or loses the connection between phone to headset and back again.

You will find that phoco is a time consuming project and it's not black and white. Thanks to robbie we now have even a better shot at it when embedded with RR. The phone option for RR is still up in the air, there's RRmobile which a lot of us are trying and watching.

                          Followup on the phones.

I have a HP/IPAQ 6515 and phoco is a slug when trying to use it. The transfer in bluetooth is horrible, the phoco setup never was correct and I finally gave up. The unit is too big for a phone and too small for a pc, other than that it has some nice features.
