  • How do you guys use your search?

I've been running RR for about a month, and one thing I miss most from Frodoplayer is the search. To be honest I dont even know how to search, or maybe my expectations are different. I went thru the FAQ
    http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=55970
it describes 3 different ways to search, but it doesnt say how to choose from those 3 types.

Frodoplayer was able to build playlists on the fly, for example if I search titles and type for eg, "night" then only all the songs that has a title with the word "night" will appear. Very useful especially if I dont remember the name of the singer or the title of the song.

Does anybody know how to modify winamp/RR to do something like this?

It depends on what skin you are using. In the BMV2 skin that comes default with road runner, click "Music" on the main menu, and then the lower icon that looks like a page of text. This is the root of your music folder. Now click on the magnifing glass, and it will work the same as Frodo that you described. Put just the word "Night" and all songs with that word will be displayed.

    Hope this helps!

yeah, i dont know maybe i have it setup wrong or something or doing something wrong i dont know. I either dont get any results at all or the results i do get back are not what im looking for and has nothing to do with my search keyword.
so i just never use it. Google has spoiled us

I'm like LS. I cant find what I'm looking for. Maybe you're right, it is skin dependent. I use the BMW E36 skin.

But yes JohnWBP, you got it working just like it did in Frodo - that is what I meant.

              John,

How did you get that list of all the songs containing the word "train?" When I search I don't get a list, but instead it goes to the next song in the open playlist that contains "train." I then have to keep conducting searches to get to each next "train" song in the playlist. And then if I happen to be below all the "train" songs in the playlist I get no results.

Your result appears to be more like how the Winamp "Jump To" feature works. Using "Jump To" you search for a song and all the songs that match the criteria appear in a window. You can then choose which you want. The "Jump To" feature is so powerful that I've wondered why it's not used in RR. Like LS, I hardly ever use search because it's so unreliable. I'm using your skin, but I don't get results like you are showing above. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

Okay, I see that the secret to John's search result is to execute the search in the browser under any of the Winamp library headings (--Albums--, --Artists--, --Genres--) rather than executing the search in open playlists.

The problem is that even with that it's difficult to fine tune the search. For example, if I wanted to find the song "Yesterday" by the Beatles, I would intuitively search for "Beatles Yesterday." This would return no results. If, however, I searched just for "Yesterday" I would receive about one hundred results, including the song "Yesterday" by the Beatles, any songs by other artists where the title includes the word "Yesterday" and all of the songs on any album by any artist where the title of the album includes the word "Yesterday."

Winamp's "Jump To" feature provides far more control. It will search the album, artist and song names of the songs in the loaded playlist and produce any song that contains all of the criteria supplied. So, for example, I could type "Beatles Yesterday" (or even "Bea Yester") in the search box and it would produce only the Beatles versions of the song "Yesterday" and those songs on any Beatles album having "Yesterday" in its title. Similarly, I could search for "Abbey Together" and it would produce the song "Come Together" on the Abbey Road album while excluding versions of the song on other Beatles albums. Though the "Jump to" feature searches only loaded playlists it would be a real benefit to the many of us who use huge playlists. I'm not a programmer and have no idea how RR and the skins work, but since this feature is native to Winamp it seems as if it could be incorporated into RR.
