  • Vista experiences anyone?

i believe it is time we started talking about RR and Vista.. i would very much like to hear experiences on attempts to run RR, FD, etc on vista..
Guino what do u say will RR work on vista?

  • #2
in the middle of testing RR under vista myself.

I previously tested RR in vista that was being run inside of vmware and everything worked ok.
I now am testing RR in a standard vista install and there are a few small issues. Havnt completely figured them out yet but i think they are mostly hardware related.

RR seems to only run ok if you turn aero off, which kind of sucks but in a car environment it likely wont matter which windows ui you have.

My volume slider in RR dosnt work in vista, but this is likey because of the complete rewrite of how audio is done in windows and plus a slight driver issue.
I think RR may have to look at the way audio is done and make some changes.

other than that it works fine. RRConfig in vista instantly opens, where in XP it always takes a while to open for some reason, not sure what the deal is with that.

I definitely intend to put vista in my car.
Some of the new features will be really nice inside the car.

There are some small issues people likely will have most of them hardware related, so your millage will vary.

but i do think its about time also to start talking about it, i know some others here have been running vista a lot longer than I.

I had no problems myself, but I went back to xp because flash is just a little bit slower in vista.

based on vista recommended hardware and potential driver issues... I will wait a long time before even looking at it... maybe when XP goes off interactive support

The hardware requirement's in most cases will be higher than a lot of the CarPC's out there for sure. I have an old Dell Inspiron 1.2Ghz laptop I tried to install Vista on some time ago, and it refused to install, stating the system could not handle it.

And double for the "Interactive Support" I have been an early adopter of OS's in the past, and have learned it is good to wait a little while before jumping in. I will wait till at least SP1 before I go using it as my primary OS. This is not even considering the drivers for the XMPCR, Touchscreen, RadioShark and other hardware in my car.

i believe that vista is very hardware demanding from what i have read!!! guys running on epias will certainly have a problem...though my hardware is more than enough to run vista i think... i will certainly wait for 6-8 months before i even attempt to tranfer everything to vista.. so many things can go wrong and face potential problems.. our car pcs are just moooore complicated than the average desktop out there

dont believe everything you read, including this.

i wouldnt say vista is more hardware demanding, esp not to the extent of all the stuff you would read. Anyone you ask whos actually run it on a fairly recent pc (2yrs old) will tell you that. Plus that is only if you want to run Aero UI which in the car is a no brainer, you dont need that in the car so just use the clasic UI which any computer should be able to handle.
Epias will probably still have problems, they barely can run winxp. IMHO epias arent good carputers, just too many sacrafices have to be made.

I also wouldnt say are carputers are more complicated than an average desktop, really is no difference to be honest.

The best thing to do is to just evaluate your specific situation and hardware and see for yourself if it all works for you. Waiting 6-8 months wont change much, nor will waiting for ServicePack X to arrive cause the truth to it all, there is allways going to be someone who has a problem with something no matter what stage windows is in when you adopt it.
At least if you evaluate it now, you know what the issues are (if any) and can look for solutions to them instead of waiting for that magic moment when everything goes perfect which may never come.

                just my 2 cents.

I'm inclined to agree with you about Vista, that said, I run an Epia M10K simply because of the low power requirements, and my use of an in-car power converter/controller. I've yet to see a more powerful ITX board with low power characteristics, other Epia's excepted. But perhaps that calls for another thread on ITX boards. I'd be interested to see your carpc specs L_S can you put them up ?.( To those who are not aware, these can now be added via the User CP to their display details )

by more complicated, i meant that, carpcs have more hardware.. the average desktop does not have all tv tuners, radio tuners, bluetooth dongles, wi fi, etc.. that is what i meant..

by waiting i would at least make sure someone else has been there before me, thus solving at least some of the problems to be faced, especially software related..

Epias are bad this has been said.. i agree with you, although we are going to get shot soon for saying this

No your not Just give me a more powerful, low power consumption alternative that doesn't cost an "arm and a leg", and I would be very interested

I wouldn't but vista in my carPc yet for at least a year after I use it in my desktop. Currently I am okay with XP and Linux. Until MS straighten out some bugs (if any ) then I get vista.

Personally I just see not reason to put Vista in the car yet. 95% of Vista is based on how the UI runs and operates. I never use "Windows" in the car, as RR is always on the front of the screen. I also can not justify anoother $200 and up for an OS to replace one on the CarPC already, that I will really never "see" to begin with.

I guess the only real advantage I see of Vista as far as RR goes, is the ability to set volume levels for individual programs. That said, running XP, my FM Radio, XM Satellite radio, iGuidance and Winamp all currently have their own individual volume settings as it is.

Will I be running this on my desktop soon, Yes, in the car, I just do not see the need for it personally. Time and time again, with test on Tom's Hardware, PC Mag and so many other places show that XP is still minutely faster than Vista (Even when not running the Arrow interface). It is also a well known fact that Vista does have a bit more of a system requirements than XP, and most of the CarPC's out there just are not well suited for Vista.
