  • KITCHEN PC: Recipe Plugin (please read)...

I just bought a house in Tennessee and I'm in the midst of installing a KITCHEN PC. Yes, you read it right, a KITCHEN PC. Pretty much it's a 15" touchscreen connected to a computer with a front end. The computer will be connected to the speakers in the kitchen and other places in the house.

My fiancée who loves to cook will be living with me. So I thought I would create something where we can all use. (Plus she doesn't like the whole Car PC idea so this was a great compromise).

It will have the following functions:

    1. MP3 Library
    2. Radio
    3. Television
    4. Camera
    5. Video (library)
    6. RECIPE PLUGIN
    7. Email viewer
    8. Rip CD/DVD Command
    9. DVD
    10. "House" phone
    11. Web browser
    12. Etc.

The purpose of the RECIPE PLUGIN is to have my fiancée be able to store all her recipes on a server (USB Harddrive) and have easy access to them. I want her to be able to view them and print them if needed. Down the road, it would be nice for her to be able to make notes on the recipe (like if she needs to vary the cook time or neat optional additions). Since the computer will be hooked up to the house network, I want her to be able to enter the recipe in from her laptop and have it refreshed on the Kitchen PC.

So I obviously need help programming something like this because my programming abilities are .....well, non-existant. I can do the skin for it, I just need someone to put together a simple program.

It needs to have two areas one for ingredients and the other for directions. You can see it in the attached JPEG of a mockup of what I would like.

I would imagine that the recipes could be inputed easily through Access or some simple program. A plugin would read the recipes and format it to fit the size of the front end.

I have already resized the BRUSHED ALUMINUM front end for Road Runner to fit 1024x768.

    Tell me what you think.

    Thanks!

This could be a more generic plugin that would also work for other things.. just a database store/lookup thing.

it is a free HTPC front end with tons of plugins. it supports all kinds of TV tuner cards so you can also watch and record TV, listen radio, get weather, hibernate and wakeup on time based or event based events etc...generic cheap MCE remote works well with it.

there is already a recepie plugin for it aslo.

It doesn't seem to have a phone plugin. That's something I really want.

            Any suggestions?

Any suggestions on how to do a database interfaced in to RR?

Fan also... (RR DB of sorts....)

I would be a fan of this also - essentially a simple form of a flat file or excel file that could be read in segments, then displayed as labels.

Input/Output would be great, but for starters if it simply could read-parse a given format then display accordingly would be great....

For simplicity if it was just

FIELD1 (data) FIELD2 (data) ...... Not sure what the most adaptable structure would be. Heck even if it had a parser that would grab between "defined tags" could then set it up to do some RSS parsing as well in the future.

I was thinking for super easy starters for most cases you could likely build your own, or have your own front-end app to gen the data, then use RR to display the contents. Personally - the very first place I would LOVE to have something like this would be for an Vehicle Address/Phone lookup. I could export to a CSV or whatever format RR would be able to understand then Read/Skin accordingly... Imagine then later linking/passing that to IG .....

I was thinking - not writing so at the mercy of those that could but certainly would love this as well guys.

                Thanks ----

Actually you bring up a very valid point - given this a IMG label of sorts would be crucial .... So for a recipe, a picture of the finished dish - for Contacts perhaps a graphic if the person, for the positions, solid illustration as to not get hurt in the vehicle Or hurt the vehicle....

All joking aside this did bring about a good point to this plugin that is being mentally developed but does not exist outside of our minds

So...umm...I can develope the Access/Excel part of this if someone is willing to output it someway to RR. I would probably use some VBA for the sake of ease for my fiancée.

Let me know what you guys think!

Great! So we have some interest. I also think it would definetely fill a need.

Still need someone to actually interface the database with the skin. I have someone who agreed to work on the skin part of it.

Meedio does what everyone has asked for thus far.. furthermore, while Roadrunner works above and beyond meedio in car, Meedio works GREAT in a home enviornment. Will be glad to post pics of setup if requested.

isn't meedio defunct? I remember reading a PR from the developer that Yahoo or someone bought the technology.
