  • MotionLock - disable dvd while moving

    Here's a little plugin that controls access to certain functions while the vehicle is in motion.
    Currently it works off GPS, but the plan is to be able to use either GPS or e-brake switch. I'm thinking maybe use the game port for simplicity of hardware, just connect the ebrake switch as a joystick button.

    The plugin intercepts commands based on the config file, and redirects to a 'denied' skin.
    It also restricts access based on the skin, so if you're watching a DVD while stationary, the plugin will close it when you start moving.

    The config file looks like:
    Code:
    Mode=GPS
    Speed=3
    cmds=dvd video
    skins=external_DVD.skin video_player.skin windvd_player.skin
    DisableScreen=motionlock_denied.skin
    Mode is not used, just a placeholder for when a hardware switch is implemented
    Speed is the max speed consider as 'stationary' - anything over that and access to the configured commands/skins is blocked
    cmds is a list of commands to block while moving, space seperated
    skins is a list of skins to block, space seperated again.

    To use this plugin, extract MotionLock.ini to your RoadRunner dir, extract motionlock_denied.skin and motionlock_denied_*.jpg to your skins directory, and wherever you save MotionLock.dll to, don't forget to to regsvr32 MotionLock.dll

    to load the plugin, add the following line to your menu.skin:
    Code:
    X,MotionLock

    Festy,
    Give LostReception a holla about his attempt to standardize plugin syntax. You got a great lil addin here but it could easily conflict with other plugins in its current configuration. Lost and Guino were supposed to get together soon and work out the details.

      I assume you meant the naming of the 'disabled' skin?
      I searched and couldn't find anything that was already using a skin by that name, but anyway - I've changed it to motionlock_denied.skin, and also added a line to it's ini to specify any skin name you want to use in it's place.

          I created a poll a while ago asking for opion if this feature should be implemented in RR, the majority give a nay to the option. I didn't really do it to be release with RR.
          Anyway, one of the option I have is still allow dvd/video to be play, but didn't show dvd/video on primary screen while in motion. This allows backseat viewer to watch movie on 2ndary screen while gps is in the front. You should consider this option as more and more people has headrest/ceiling monitor for backseat.

            i never understood why people wanted this.
            I understand why companies intergrate it for there products, liability issues, but seems odd for the end user to want it. Like i wouldnt put a speed limiter on my car to stop it from going over 60mph. But if i rented out moving trucks i would (and they do).
            I know some people wanted it for legal reasons in there area, in those cases do they make you prove you have something like this and that it works?

              Well I can't imagine I'll ever want to watch DVDs while driving, and the back seats have their own dvd players - so why not stay legal and avoid the possibillity of a fine? I don't know - maybe some people *do* watch movies while driving

                in reality some people indeed do watch movies while they drive.
                Personally i love driveing (and my life) too much to be distracted by watchin some movie on a crapy 7in screen. My carputer dosent even have a dvd drive and the cdrom is in the trunk. The kids dont ride with me often so i dont have to cater to there bordom either
                I dont see how this plugin could make you legal though, maybe seem like legal. I guess its for those who cant control there self.

                      I watch movies/Family Guy all the time while driving.
                      Its really not a big deal and not as dangerous as most people think.
                      Most of it is peripheral-eye watching, but if you're out on a highway
                      without much traffic, I see no problem with glancing at the screen for
                      a few seconds at a time.

                      And I know all you safely people are going to flip and point out 'what if a dog/deer/kid runs into the street!??'. Well you just have to just use
                      your best judgement and be alert.

                      I've been doing this for almost 3 years and have never even had a close call because of it. And, IMHO, I think that Im safer then some guy talking on his cellphone because I constantly aware that its a distraction and compensate appropriately for it.

                      Plus passengers love it

                        I kinda figure this. if you are too irresponsible to not watch DVD's while you drive, you probably are not going to go to the effort to actually install a plugin to keep you from doing it. Just my 2c.

                          I really cant wait for this feature to be working 100% without problems, Here in the UK the cops can give you points on your license and a fine on the spot if you are caught watching movies. How are they to know that your not watching a movie? This plugin is great since you can actually have it hooked up to handbrake. Thus making you have an actual chance of defence against a court of law!

                            Somehow it wont' for me.
                            Finally I've got the gpsspd label working.
                            It now shows the speed tha is beeing generated by the GPSgate GPS simulator.

                            But it seems that the motionlock plugin is not being loaed.
                            id did the dll registratin with regsvr32, copied the .ini to the rr homedir, copyd the skin and .pg file to my skin dir ... but nothing happens.

                            Any hints or suggestions?

                              Did you move the dll to your RR dir *after* you regsvr32'd it? If so, regsvr32 /u the dll, then regsvr32 it again.
