  • My second tallscreen skin

    hi all,

I finally got my 12.1" screen, and hooked it up my desktop to test it, and my previous tallscreen skin wasn't quite up to my expectations (looked crappy, lol) so i decided i would redo it from the ground up. i am satisfied with it now, and I am ready to release it. I'm not sure how many people will have a use for it, but ill throw it up here anyway.

its not completely done, but i wasn't sure how to do what i wanted to (have 2 apps embedded in one screen, mpc and IG4)... if anyone knows how to do this, please let me know.

    here are some screenshots:

    Audio player:

    Audio/gps:

    Audio/coverflow:

    Video player/browser:

    Skin browser:

    Backgrounds/font sizes:

    Fonts / font colors picker:

    Logo settings:

HD radio: (not sure what to put in the lower half?)

Windows explorer embedded/ ewf settings: (ewf scripts from shock v6)

in the skin directory, there are two .bat files, hide.bat and unhide.bat, these hide or unhide all the files that will be messed up if you edit and save the skin in skin editor. just run the hide.bat file before you open the skin, and run unhide.bat before you use the skin in RR.

any input or suggestions are welcome, and thanks for looking.

sweet, by the way, it was originally designed to be run at 768x1024, but the general.ini has it sized at 600x800 (so it will fit on my home computer screen) so some things may look wrong.

      thanks for any input,

I plan on running it at 768x1024, so I should be O.K.

I know I promised a review a month ago, but life tends to get in the way of fun. The following are my observations, comments, suggestions.

I really like the implementation of iLists, transparency, and font sizing/color changeability of this skin. Looks like you put a lot of thought and effort into your design. The dual screen style lends itself to a myriad of customization options. So here are some things I came up with after testing for a few hours on the road.

The buttons need to stand out more, especially the separation of one from another. I like the center play controls, but the order is confusing, i.e., I recommend mute, vol-, vol+ should be grouped together on the left with the play controls on the right. The track scrollbar needs to stand out more (maybe invert the base colors). A 3D effect on the buttons and a surround for the top info bar would really make the skin pop. Turning on icons/thumbnails for playlists makes navigating a little easier. I think it would also be cool to be able to flip the GPS screen from top to bottom (or any sets for that matter) and this was discussed in the other tallskin thread, Altitudinous[/URL], to no avail. The radio screen needs to include the local, tune, and scan commands.

Overall this is a great functional skin and since the is really only one alternative for tallskins I'd love to work with you to improve and enhance it further. I can also provide testing for other screens like Sal R.'s Album Browser(coverflow alternative), XM, Silabs Radio, Internet Radio, Movietimes, TrafficCams, RRCam, GPSGasonline, etc. all of which I use often. As a start let me recommend adding a Menu button to the main menu so multiple menu pages can be developed like DFX, then open the development to the community. Or maybe << and >> on the ends of the bottom bar to switch menus. Depending on how much interest is generated, maybe add configurable buttons(press and hold bring up a menu of available commands) so users could arrange menus to suit. I think another option you might want to consider is shifting info bars like Mimimal.

I fully recognize skin development is tedious and time consuming so I'd like to help if I can.Skin development ala RR's open source can work, i.e., anyone can develop screens but you maintain control of official releases. Carwings and CrystalBlue are great examples of this Can significantly reduce the burden on you to build screens and allow you to concentrate on integration.

Unfortunately, at this stage in the hobby there probably aren't many of us that can actually use a tallskin at this time. Who knows if we could get this skin close to the level of DFX it might catch on.

thanks for all the suggestions, they make a lot of sense, and i will work on implementing quite a few of them, if not all. unfortunately, development of this skin has come to a bit of a halt because i just moved, and have yet to be able to hook up my main system. i should have it back up and going in a few days.

i will be releasing the psds so we can work on it like blk did with carwings. but i want to get a few thing taken care of with it first, like reorganizing the buttons, and fixing a few other things. im not sure of how to make the screens switch from top to bottom without making a whole new screen for it. normally i wouldn't have a problem with doing that, but i am going to be switching to a cf card install, so im trying to keep the size down.

            thanks for all the input,

I tried a ton of different ways to get the two screens on one instance of RR to work for biggie, but I couldn't figure it out without doing a different screen. It may be possible with flash, but I haven't gotten into it that yet, and it may be too much for a CF install.

I'd hate to be negative, but this would not be a good skin for a handheld. The resolution is too much for that small of a screen and text would be unreadable. Also, RR doesn't run on Palm OS, but has been run on some Pocket PC's (Windows Mobile) but the skin would need to be revamped to work for a small screen and what it's capable of.

I think you were intending to compliment davidp on his design and to that notion I agree, I tried to make a tallscreen skin, and it definitely takes a little more patience to design than a normal widescreen skin.

thank you all for the compliments, but i have to agree with monkeyracer, this skin would be way too tiny on most screens smaller than around 8 to 10 inches. i find it to be just about perfect for my 12" screen.

progress on the skin will resume sometime soon, i just got the dev. pc hooked back up in my new place. i will keep the thread updated as it comes along.

oh i understand.. i only said it cuz of its shape.. I didn't think it was feasible anyway...

Just curious, how would you fit your skin into 12"" screen. Is ur screen 12" tall and 4" wide?

the 12" is measured diagonally, the actual viewable screen size is about the size of a normal sheet of paper. i designed the skin using the 12" screen, so it looks right at home

Its been awhile since any updates so I decided to provide one. The primary benefit for me having a tall skin is the full screen GPS. So I put together the skins/PNGs/ini to go from the external GPS screen to a Full screen GPS with the audio controls moved from the center to the bottom. The attached is designed for FreeDrive, but editing the ExecTbl.ini can change that. I'll probably replace the vis button command to change the gps to/from day/night since it has no other function here but again this will be FreeDrive specific.

Just extract the following zip to your TALLRR directory and give it a try.

cool, sorry for the lack of updates, but my carputer has been out of the car for about a month now. plus i might be getting a new car soon (08 dodge avenger R/T), so i might be scrapping the whole tallscreen plan. right now the whole thing is kinda up in the air.

i will update as i can,
