  • General skinning question

I've gotten pretty good at editing skins. And I can manipulate the graphics pretty well. However, I have no idea where to begin with orginally skins. Where do all these wonderful graphics come from?

    1. How are the buttons drawns?
    2. Where do the icons come from?
    3. What are some of the graphic tricks employed
Its not the cards you're dealt, its how you play the hand!

A time ago I modded some skins for myself. I searched the internet for some logo's. If you use Google, Yahoo or another search engine, you can also search for images and pictures.

If you want tekst buttons, just search a nice font, install it, write the button name in words and copy it to photoshop for further editing.

Thank you, I guess I'm really asking about the advance graphics stuff. For instance, The aluminum frame around this skin and how it looks literally like its 3 dimentional. And how the buttons like like actually buttons not just 2 dimensional rectangles.

Also, the way the colors in the buttons aren't solid, there are faded and blended, shaded and highlighted.

I think you need some photoshop skills for that.

Yeah, I would agree. I've been playing around with it for a while now and I think I'm getting the hang of it. I was just hoping for someone to be able to give me a couple of the effects that they use or whatever, like I think "Buttonize" is the effect in PSP to make the button 3d, but there is obviously much more giong on. LIke is gradient fill the resson buttons are filled the way they are? My PS skill are weak and to make matters worst, I have always used Paint Shop Pro which makes me an outcast. I'd like to make the conversion to PS but I'm affraid to los the skills i have . .

Well you can get the plugins for PSP, like eye candy 4000. With that, the glass plugin gives you the option to buttonise, gradient, highlight all in one filter...

Most RR skins use three major PS skills IMO:

              1. Layering
              2. Gradients
              3. Bevels (or layer styles)

Buttons are usually beveled and drawn on separate layers. I would advise to stay away from those "Eyecandy" or other PS plugins and just play around with the above three techniques.

For creating graphics I would say that the pen tool is most useful. Try practicing with the pen and the "convert pen tool"

That's a great site. I've been mucking around trying to create my own buttons and stuff but I haven't found a good tutorial on it until this site you mentioned.

I've also noticed that 'blur' is another skill that appears necessary for creating a skin.

Now if only I had a few artistic skills.

Hey thanks for the offer. You can bet I'll take you up on that at somepoint as questions arise. One thing I credit myself with is I am a very very quick learner. Since the start of this thread I've taught myself tons about PS. I am now able to change colors of cars, work with layers, shadows gradients, color overlays etc. I have had great luck with my little projects so far. That said, I'm really liking your skin. The idea of having the LOGO, low opacity and faded into the background is great. I really like it so far.
