  • Whats happening with external sound card support...

    Hi all,

just curious if anybody has heard anything WRT external sound card support in SD.
I have the new SRM Audio Advantage USB (which is the updated SRM Roadie) which i want to use with my G4. However, i understand the radio and the rear channels do not work in SD when connected to a USB soundcard. Is this correct? If so, when will support be incorporated into SD.

    Many thanks

    James

YOu can use the radio on the G4 with any sound card you want. This was fixed shortly after the initial release. You won't be able to control the rear channels from StreetDeck on an external sound card, but they will still work and you can control them from windows.

Thanks for the reply, but i remember reading somewhere that radio dosnt work with an external soundcard but i then found this post (http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/stre...ot-mp3car.html) which explains why my radio wasnt working and now after reading that it does.
Now that i think about it, it was probably Centrafuse that the radio dosnt work with external soundcards. As im trialing Road Runner, Streetdeck and Centrafuse at the same time, reading through all these posts can blur into one. Apologies for the confusion.

      2 more questions...

1/ In the future, will there be a way to control fade and balance controls through SD as opposed to the sound card control Panel.

2/ Is there / or will there be a way of renaming the radio presets to what you like?

      Cheers in advance

Fader and balance controls are only supported on the built in sound card on the G4. If we do add more generic support in the future it will probably only be for Vista based systems.

        No, you can't rename presets.

Wait a sec; I asked for this earlier on another thread and there was no reply. I do have external USB Audigy connected to XP SP2 machine. I *can* get sound from rear speakers in Windows and in FrodoPlayer, but I could not find a way to do so in SD.

Can someone please tell me exactly what, in Windows or in SD, needs to be configured to allow this?

Mate when I tested it, the volume works for both front and back speakers whilst in SD; I was hoping that SD in the future would allow both balance and fade controls via its GUI rather than making those adjustments from the sound card control panel. I adjust these settings all the time depending on both the type of music I’m listening too and the volume I have the music playing at. As adjusting both the fader and balance controls, makes a big difference (IMHO) to the listening experience.

If sound is not coming from your rears then there are a couple of things you can check.

First - Check to make sure that you have the latest drivers and software installed for your sound card. If you have a 4 channel sound card (which you should if you want front and rear sound), then you will need the software that’s specific to your sound card to enable the rear channels. In the past I have had only the window drivers installed for a Sound Blaster card but the rear channels only started to work after installing the SB software.

Second - Conduct a speaker test. Through your sound card software ensure you have 4 channels enabled then send a test signal to each speaker to confirm that they are operating correctly.

Third - Goto 'Sound' in your control panel, and from memory I think it’s the 'advance menu' and ensure quadraphonic speakers is selected. (In theory having this selected whilst using windows only drivers, should ensure that the 4 channels of your card are working - my experience ... see above... shows this doesn’t always happen, but still good practice to have it selected anyway)

Fourth - For optimal performance ensure you have only one soundcard installed. I understand many people have two installed and I’m not saying that doesn’t work. But in your case if you have both, on board sound and USB sound then this sometimes can create problems. To disable the onboard sound goto you’re BIOS and there should be a menu there.

Fifth - I know that when first installing SD it comes up with a configuration wizard, and one of the options was to select a soundcard to use. If you only have one sound card installed then there should be only one selection to make; but if you have two, and you want to keep two, then ensure you have the right one selected. - I’m not sure of how to bring the wizard up again after SD is installed, but I’m sure it’s under settings somewhere.

Sixth - If you still can’t get it to work, conduct an idiot check; all leads, connections, speakers and then confirm once again you have the latest drivers installed. Once all that is completed failing a setting in street deck I don’t know about (I haven’t been playing with it long). I would uninstall SD and delete any folders and registry keys (be very careful in there) that the uninstall left behind. Then I would Re - install SD, but before upgrading to version 1.10.0.0; see if the rear speaker’s start working then do the upgrade.

Seven - After all of that and it still doesn’t work, I’m sure one of the gurus from SD might be able to help you out.

            All the best

            James

              Thanks for the note James.

Wiring etc cannot be the issue since FrodoPlayer and simple Windows, Media Player etc are able to output from all 4. Sound applet in Ctrl Panel is set to 4 speakers.

SB software is in fact installed, although I'm pretty sure there is a newer version; I could give it a try except it doesn't make sense for WMP or Frodo to work while SD to not. The way I config'd SB is to clone FL speaker to RL; FR to RR. There is an option deep in SB applets that reads "better for MP3 sources" etc; basically stereo MP3 file normally doesn't come out of rears unless you do processing on them. Instead of virtual surround kind of mess, I went ahead with simply used the radio button that sends rear speakers whatever it is that front's are getting. This works perfectly with all players in Windows except for StreetDeck.

Based on these clarifications, do you have any other suggestions? Do you still think SB software might be at play here?

I really would prefer not to introduce any change to the machine because otherwise things are pretty healthy (except for a few other active bugs I'm tracking)

              Thanks.
