  • Hopefully my final SD questions :)

Well after running SD for 3 months or so I am overall happy with the product. I had to work out some kinks but so far so good, I am still working on getting a couple things stable (like when i click browse within navi locks up SD every time) or video locking up my SD. I don't use those functions much so it's not a huge deal for me but the following 4 below are important and could use some help.

    1. When you select a custom POI say "theater" it gives you a max of 100 results with no option to go to another page of another 100. So in my case if i select theater within 5 miles and there are 110 in my area it makes no difference if I change it to 10, 15 or 20 miles because its maxing out at the 5 mile point. Is there a way to have it display more pages of 100? This pretty much makes my POI's useless because if I know of a theater 15 miles away and it doesn't show up on the search I have no way of finding it within my POI's.

    2. Is there a way to download POI's via the internet and save them locally? I don't mind downloading all of the POI's in New Jersey while sitting in my driveway because the local POI's stored within my SD has yet to find a single POI I have tried to search for over the 3 months I have been using it now.

    3. Is it possible to search for a business name beyond 100 miles? I tried to locate Tropicana casino in Atlantic City which is about 130 miles from me and it will not find it because it searches only within 100 miles. Is there a way to enable a greater distance then 100 miles? I don't travel out of state much but 100 miles really doesn't cover much when searching for a place.

    4. Is it possible to set your current location as a favorite? I noticed that if I put my 1 friends address in my SD navi it can no find his location. This would come in handy if I could go to his house and add it to my favorites manually. Is this possible?

    Thanks in advance.

I've asked for this one, myself. You'd think that would be easy enough, but the SD folks told me I could make my own skin to do that.

Yeah...and I don't have a day-job, and don't spend 18 hours a week travelling, and want to spend my free time learning to code a skin for a product I paid $300 for.

re #4 - - you can assign a gesture for this. go to settings - input - gestures, find the 'NAV - Add to Favorites', and give it a gesture of your liking.

Not as good as a button, but doable.

Great...thanks! That's better than not having the option at all, or having to write a skin for the functionality.

I tried this today, clicked on navigation add to favorites. first tried to make some type of heart gesture and saved it. every time I tried to use the gesture it would come up red as an unrecognized command. I went back and changed it to a right arrow (like a sideways v) thinking it needed to be more simple. saved it and same result it comes up as red markings rather then blue as if its unrecognized. any ideas?

I noticed that when you create a custom gesture you have to be a lot more precise when you use it.. than with regular gestures

do any other custom gestures work for you?

come to think of it, I tried this briefly in this latest version and also didn't have success (but dismissed it / didn't have time to troubleshoot further)...perhaps a bug.

the only custom gesture I tried was this one, I went from a gesture i would remember (the heart gesture) for add to favorites when it didnt work i assumed it wasnt picking up the accuracy correctly so i made it the simple > because there is no way it wouldnt pick that one up and sure enough it didnt so on that note no i didnt try any others.

Custom gesture don't work nearly as well as the ones mapped to letters. Each letter gesture actually maps to several different types of glyphs. You will have to put in possibly up to 20 or 30 different custom glyphs for a single gesture before it starts recognizing your custom gesture well. Simpler ones will only require a few though to get good recognition, you definitly want to program in more then one glyph for each custom gesture you do.

To get a custom gesture to work, you'll want to pick something simple, and then when programming in repeat the gesture as many times as you can in as many different ways as you can. Expect to spend a few minutes programming it in, more depending on complexity.

Hey Chuck, thanks for the insight I will give it a shot over the weekend.

Any input on the other 3 questions?

Chuck, that is 0 for 4 for me then because the second i click browse mode in navi on 1.1.0.0 my SD locks up I cant do anything.

Are there any addons or work arounds to accomplish 1-2-3? These are all features I had on my eclipse navigation and they are extremely handy.

FYI - i took Chuck's advice and when setting the gesture repeated it multiple times (it regsitered a couple of different key codes with it, even though I tried to repeat as consistently as possible)...clicked save, and now it works.

The browse issue in navigation is a commonly reported issue that people are having. You can find it in the bug reporting forum.
