  • SAFE or UNSAFE, that is the question...

    Good morning all.

In most cases, my passengers work with the system when I'm driving, in terms of searching for a place to eat, drink or be merry.

Its odd to me that I can type in the name to search for while the vehicle is in motion, but I can't hit LOCAL to execute the search. The typing of the name is the thing that could potentially cause a wreck. But, in my case, I'm not the one who does it. Is there a program parameter (in the shortcut or something) I can set to disable the "Safety check"? As it is now, I have to disconnect the GPS receiver to do this, do what I need to do, then reconnect.

Some digital mods aren't set as SAFE even though they are, like Weather. All it does is speak information information to you, something that can be done while in motion. (unrelated) I have noticed that the weather mod REQUIRES the NAVIGATION to have initially been run before it will work because it needs the zip code from the map data (too bad that can't be pre-loaded).

I'm sure at some point, someone created a parameter that does this for development reasons or something, but I'm sure its held tight against the develpers chests. Isn't the startup disclaimer enough to meet all potential laws and fend off potential lawsuits? If not, add a statemet like: "if you're stupid enough to let this system interfere with your ability to drive, your own stupidity is at fault, not us".

    Thanks,

    Kris

I'm not sure of the precise legalities in this sense. However, I can guarantee you that if there is a paramater to bypass this functionality, it won't be posted on the forum.

I will forward your comments over to the developers and see if I can get an answer from them. Please note, I'm not asking them for a way to bypass the features, I'm asking them for the reasons that these features are not allowed while in motion.

Allowing for full motion video in full view of the driver is illegal. Just a splash screen stating that you shouldn't use StreetDeck unless conditions permit isn't enough.

Thats fine. I'm not looking to watch a movie or TV, but a Visualization should be allowed (in my mind). Also, the ability to search should be allowed for the times that a passenger is using the system (which for me is all the time).

I understand about allowing a passanger to use the system, the problem is, how do you get StreetDeck to determine who is using the system?

It's better to assume it's the driver and not allow it than to assume it's the passanger and make a mistake that could cost someone their life.

fact is that we need to be able to do a search while in motion it does not violate the safety laws surrounding screens in view of the driver... the Pioneer and Kenwood navigation units allow you to do searches and enter destinations etc while in motion..

I agree the the OP that the weather plugin should be considered safe but I would also like to see the search function enabled.

Showing Video/Visualisations however are definitely illegal while in motion if the driver can see it...

and I know that it can be a big distraction.

            I don't think it's a big secret.

-testmode from the command line will disable safeties, but you WILL get a warning message that you have to click OK to whenever the system starts up. That parameter is specifically not to be used by the driver while driving. Drive safely.

This is not true, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, Clarion, etc. all disable address searches and entering destinations, at the least, while the vehicle is in motion. Provided they are connected correctly and THERE SAFTY FEATURES have not been BYPASSED.

The only exception on some models is via voice input. They all do not allow touchscreen input.

In fact i believe on one of Alpine's non-navigation double din's, it even disables adjustment of advanced audio settings ie. crossovers, parametric eq, etc. unless the vehicle is parked.
