I couldn't contain myself - had to share it with you guys, but don't get overly excited - this is VERY VERY alpha!

I am working on a digital mod for traffic and it's coming along pretty well - very early stages but... It has traffic whereever local.live.com has traffic, and, naturally, requires an active internet connection - however the data transfer amount is very insignificant (about 1k for a what you would see at default zoom). First iteration will not have any support for rerouting based on traffic, but I am thinking how I could make that work (very long term!).

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know what I have in store for you.

If you have ideas you want me to think about incorporating, let me know!

    Mark

p.s. I know you want to know when this will be done. Unfortunately, I am really busy at work and have very little time, but I am working as fast as I can!

I think this will be a sick module. I can hardly wait. Might I suggest however that you make the data have the option of being "automatically refreshed" (as you currently do it seems), or a "manual refresh" for those of us without an active internet connection.

Here's the scenario. I currently pull up the traffic map when I leave my office. I don't look at it again usually (till the next day)...

...So it would be nice that (instead) I get into my car. Go online in the parking lot where I have a wifi connection sitting still out there while the engine warms up, etc... I get the overlay data downloaded. Then I can happily go on my way. It's not like the roads are going to mysteriously clear up or change drastically in the time it takes me to go from Lower Queen Anne to Mercer Exit then across 520E and home to Redmond (ya' like how I used places you know -- since *I* live here too! ) Then, if I happen to be stuck in some long line of cars and my 802.11b/g gets signal, I could manually refresh (or you could detect that and update for me).

      Ya dig?

While seattle is one of the most "unwired" cities, it's still not a mesh network, so connectivity is sporatic.

Lastly, and I know you are just finishing up your outstanding Movie Time mod, just curious if there's any update on a release for this one? Your post above is from 2005 -- I figure it's a good time to ask ;-p

I think that most users probably do not have an active internet connection in their car...good idea. Which probably means that downloading traffic for an entire region at once, since it would be worth while to have traffic in a 60 mile radius (which should encompass the congested areas in most major cities and suburbs) But...I have no idea how that would change the coding.

            Looking forward to it!

looks sweet. I'm going to have to give it a try. My only concern (like others) is not having an internet connection in my car. My commute is 35 miles each way into and out of the city. I would like to be able to grab a traffic report for the city (Denver) before I leave my house (35 miles North). Hopefully there can be a cache function to grab it for me before I leave home.

Yup, this is a great idea as pointed out by you and DAE51D, and I am working on incorporating it into the design, in fact the first version will probably be just this.

Thanks for the great feedback - it's always better to get it sooner rather than later.

Wow. That's awesome. Another vote in favor of this, especially when incorporated into route guidance. My girlfriend's 2008 328i does this and I am jealous. I think BMW pulls the information from local FM stations, though.

I think DAE51D has the right idea. Have it pull up the traffic when you enter a route. Though not every time, maybe as an alternate option when you calculate.
