  • will 4GB flash memory work in linux?

I just saw this auction and I want to get this as my only storage on the linux box I'm building for my car. Has anyone heard anything good or bad about them?

just very slow, problem about flash drives, and cards. Unless its in a saved state then it would be cool

Also, don't you think 4GB is rather small for a music library? Your better off getting an iPod nano or something if you only want that much space.

Its for the OS. I have no plans on storing music on it. If I ever do decide to store music on my carputer it would be to a hard drive.

OK cool. I just figured, if you are going to be using a HDD in your design then you might as well use it to store the OS as well.

Putting Linux on a compact flash card and using a CF to IDE converter will work nicely. You can get a nice install of linux easily under 100MB. Then get 256MB of RAM (or more) for the computer.

When your computer boots it takes the entire linux image and loads it into memory. This means yoru OS will run very fast as the whole thing is in memory. You can have a HDD for storing music, movies, etc, as well.

I have used this method for making my old computers give me more bang for their buck. An old Pentium II running linux all in memory will seem like a rocketship compared to running Windows. The only compromise is you have to have enough ram to hold the OS image and run the OS as well as other programs.

Update on the 4GB flash. Turns out it was a SCAM I fell for. Apparantly they hacked a 128MB flash to make it report as 4GB. Needless to say when you get past the 128 you get a bunch of errors. Sigh. Now its either cf or micro drive. Time to do more research.

They scam people like this when you visit China. There you can get 4GB (aka 128Mb) for $40.
