  • I have seen the light!

I just wanted to say that I have been flirting with using linux for some time, I tried out redhat 9 and mandrake a couple of years ago, and also tried fedora and knoppix. But nothing ever stuck for me, and i viewed it in the end as a good learning experience to aquinte myself with the linux os. I just did not see any real advantages at the time using thoose distros.

Then a couple of weeks ago I decided I needed a new challange, I was playing around with a knoppix cd for network security and it got me thinking about linux again.

So I started reading up on the distros availible. And I stubbled apon Gentoo.

    Whoa!

Now this is what i was looking for. No fluf, no installer, AMD64, compile it all (just what you need) attitude.

I read through the installation manual and had it up and running in half a day. This is what I was looking for. I am in no way a linux guru and i have alot of learning to do, but this is perfect. I think the reason the other distros (that i tried) did not catch my attention is that they did not feel like they offered any real control more then windows.

I am giong to start looking into my options for carpc linux, (I imagine the whole portage thing is perfect for it) and i might shoot some general questions at you guys as well.

this is cool, I have to take a look at what you guys have been developing in the forum software wise.
    My Install

    Software:
    CFiG v1
    iGuidance Plugin for CF

    CarShell
    Working shell for a CarPC

    StopWatch
StopWatch plugin remade for centrafuse RC1

Great. I'm glad you fell in love with Gentoo. The truth is, most distros *are* as flexible as Gentoo is. However, with Gentoo you are forced to meddle with it at the beginning. Throughout your Gentoo experience you will learn more about etc files, compiling kernels, and using unix tools than any Unix primer would teach you. I smile everytime I'm able to pipe some commands together to do something really cool.

It really is nice being able to know exactly what your system is doing and to know exactly how it is configured. It amazes me how people complain about config scripts. If you ask me, config scripts offer a searchable and restorable way to configure your system. Heck, you can backup your whole configuration in a single tarball and store it off-site.

Software-wise there is not _that_ much going on on this forum. We are still sort of pioneering and have alot of work to do. So please share your ideas and comments with us as we develop these new frontends.

Linux truely is a breath of fresh air.

I have to plug Silverwolf (my software) of course but I wouldn't venture into installing it just yet as I'm redoing the MP3 playback stuff (see the "Llama and Intuition's Techie thread") that should be done in a couple weeks God willing.

      Welcome to the club
      Silverwolf 2 is dead.
      Silverwolf 3...?

-1 Troll: Your avatar is very fitting for that comment.

Starting a linux distro war is like a vi/emacs, xine/mplayer or kde/gnome war.

LFS _is_ nice. The problem comes with actually updating the system. If you want to update one package, you gotta fetch it, try it, then find out that half a dozen dependancies are out of date and start finding and installing them. These dependancies will have others etc... So you get this big tree of crap you gotta install.

                  Hooray for package managers.

that's it! that's why I use sourcemage..to install cast kdebase; cast xmms (I can choose the dependencies(the optional ones) to deinstall dispell kdebase.. we update the versions in the grimoire(scribe update) we ask for a system update in queue ; sorcery queue(we can choose to update all or just a few things) and then cast --queue and the system is updated!!If there's a library problem we just cleanse --fix and it searches for all libraries linked to that packages!if it's broken. it compiles everything again!!bye have to go!

D&D the game?..it's all "magical" terms cast; dispell; grimoire; sorcery; probably cleanse is the only one not related to it; scribe; and other things I don't remember..ohh distcc is supported in compilation too..if it fails to compile with p.e -j6 CC=distcc it tryes again without -j and CC=distcc. I like it
