  • 8.4" touch screen failure - troubleshoot and replacement advice

This is a Apple Mac Mini question.

The touch screen on my Xenarc 8.4" 800TSV has been broken for some time and I want to fix it. I have two questions:

    1. How do I troubleshoot it to find out if the failure is the touch screen or the controller? Also, Digital WW is out of the panels and mp3car.com doesn't sell them. I'd appreciate any sources for these parts, if you have them.

    2. Should I replace it with a capacitive touch screen or something different? Remember, this is a PPC Mac Mini we're talking about. In searching around the net, I don't see any Mac drivers for capacitive or LED touch screens but was wondering if someone here might have more info about it than I do.

Only two things on the panel usually break:
The panel is cracked, or the ribbon cable is broken. Finding a ribbon cable break can be tricky, but sometimes you can obviously see a break in the copper.
On the controller, it is most likely the either the entire controller, or a connector.
On my screen I was able to determine the exact chip that was fried because that part got hot.

A capacitive touch-screen is an analog part, and a similar sized screen should work on another controller once calibrated.

Instead of repairing mine, I just removed the touchscreen which caused too much glare on the screen.

You're right about the glare, but there are times when it is just more expedient to touch the item you want on the screen although mainly I want it because for some reason, most people who see it expect that it is a touch screen!
