  • Apple TV as in-car entertainment

Last week I sold my car (mercedes ML) with CarPC included.
And after 5 years of using a CarPC as a main system I want know something different.

Car that I just bought (Audi Allroad 2.5 TDI) as already a fine radio plus Nav.
To be able to play my MP3's I am gonna use a unit that you can attched to the CD changer cable.
    No problem in that area.

But now comes the most important part. Entertainment for the kids in de back.

Idea is to buy a 15 inch roof LCD and attache a Apple TV to it.
I have two reason for using the Apple TV:
-able to use XBMC (kids already are used to control XBMC at Home)
-and able to play ISO's. (that way I dont need to change the movies they already watch)

But before I can start this new adventure I need to figure out some things.

First of all, what is the best way to give power to the Apple TV? (system will be started by pressing the power button.Does not need to power up everytime I use the car)

and second, how can I connect the Apple TV to the screen?
Screen only has a Video IN. And as far as I can see apple TV as : composite, and HDMI.

Can I use something like a Composite to svideo converter?

About sound, for this i will use wireless headphones. LCD i have in mind is able to transmite sound by IR.

i couldn't find any immediate info on the power supply voltages(to see if using something like a m1 or m3 power supply might work), but did find a link that might help you out a little:
    http://www.appletvhacks.net/2007/10/...inment-system/

it seems that you will need to use a inverter to power it, and you will need a component-to-composite converter to get the picture on a standard composite input screen.

      Thanks for the link.

Need to be honest that I really do not know anything about inventors.
Do you know if they can drain your battery when system is off and engine is NOT running?
(for example when car is parked for a few days)

Sorry for the late response, I believe that invertors will only drain the battery if they are left on, though, I have never used one for any longer than for a couple minutes, so I can't be sure...

You might be able to work out a delayed shut off circuit to turn it off after a certain amount of time after the car is turned off, though not sure how the appletv unit takes power and if it could deal with getting turned on and off.

There is a mamber here that builds and sells microcontrollers that might work for this- the name is curiousity, try checking with him for a switching solution for the apple tv.

Sorry for raising the old thread because I didt want to start a new one.
Would this inverter work as the op intended?

Thanks for the link but I dropped the idea to use a Apple TV.
Instead of that I did get me a old Xbox (first edition) which already was able to work with XBMC.

At this point I am moving all parts from the original case to a smaller home made one.
This because I wont be using the DVD player.
All the movies are going to be already on the 160gb Harddrive.

I will use a M2-ATX as powers supply.

Also the fact that the Xbox connects to the LCD without any problem was one of the reason to go for it

You could use SlingBox SOLO it simply connects to your digital receiver and you can watch your OWN tv from anywhere in the world (if you have internet access)

So that way you can use your iPhone and do tethering or if you have 3G in your car then it's easier!!
