  • Damn we need Nav software

We need a GPS program, 3-D if possible taking advantage of the Mac Hardware and Open GL

oh, we all agree there! the problem is Route 66 is not up to the task for this...and they are about the only game in town. other manufactuers at one time did make GPS software ported to Mac, but no luck.

You guys might have some luck with iNav. I *think* their program is written in Java.

Used Route 66, seems fine to me. Sorry, but nothing else is on the market

I've gone ahead and contacted them to find out what language, and if they are making an OS X port. we shall see!

yes, but most PC apps have been confirmed to run slow. the only way to really tell is someone that actually has this software and one of the major PC nav programs.

that could work for d3 from NinjaMonkey.
You could at least give it a try..

                    And how about this?

Just a quick update: we are now working on the display sub-system and at the same time talking to Navteq and TeleAtlas about the map data. We already have data samples from TeleAtlas, and hopefully will be able to decide which data we will use during next week. Since the software is modular, it should be possible to add support for more map data formats later

We plan to release a stand-alone application as well as a plug-in for my TatraApp. The stand-alone version will only work with GPS receiver, the plug-in will also be able to use data from vehicle sensors (speed, remaining fuel information) for some extra functions. Some more functions:

                    - basic functions controlled by PowerMate and max 2 buttons
                    - heading-up as well as north-up map display
                    - freely definable camera position and view angle
                    - fully customizable colors for map display
                    - dynamic zoom (the faster you go, the further you see)
                    - detailed settings for map detail to avoid unnecessary information
                    - turn-by-turn instructions
                    - voice guidance (for now English-only, using Text-To-Speech, non English names will probably sound funny)
                    - fast map drawing (several times the speed of Route 66)
                    - automatic refuel recommendation & guidance to gas station (plugin only)

We might be able to get TMC traffic info working for some European countries, but no promise on that.

The application will be free (probably under GPL), but the user will have to purchase the map data from its source (TeleAtlas, Navteq).

I contacted iNav and got the following response:
                      Hi Brian:
According to the Programmers, there's no plan to develop similar product for
                      Mac and Linux platform.
Navtech maps are usually updated twice a year. However, depends on the
schedule for the user interface development, the actual iguidance release
may or may not coincide exactly w/ the map release. The next upgrade is
v2.1 which will be released in Q1/2005. v2.1 will include new map from
Navteq w/ much improved coverage of Canada.

                      Thank you.

                      To whom this may concern:

I currently already own your product for Windows XP and love it.
However, I was wondering about the following on your product:

                      * What programming language is your product developed in?
                      * Does your company have any plans to port this product to Linux or
                      Mac OS X?
                      * How frequently are the maps from NavTech updated for your product?

                      Please advise.

I'm a bit confused... Does navteq provide the routing engine and data, or just the data?

If its just the data then you can grab that from the US Census TIGER data.
