  • Going Mac over PC

    http://pentatonicrecords.com/carpc/mac%20vs%20pc.html

Just something I made up to help me justify why I can get the mac mini and not worry about it.

Just as a side note, none of the prices include shipping, they are also all in US dollars so for all you crazy europeans you may need to do some converting .

I built both the systems as close as possible, if one had a DVD burner so did the other, if one had 512 ram, so did the other. The only thing that is obviously different is the source of power (since I was unable to find any CarNetix adapters for the Mini) and the speed of the CPU (1.25Ghz vs 1.0Ghz) but in Mac world that's not really a big deal.

If you're looking for the Excel sheet that I made you can find it here:

    http://pentatonicrecords.com/carpc/data/

Just download the file and hack it up as much as you'd like.

The system is based of a system that will fit in my 2000 Dodge Dakota Club Cab with using the motorized 7" touch screen from digitalww (assuming it ever gets there). Just so you have a little background the plan for the mini install would be to mount it in my glove box with the power inverter at the front of the car. As far as the PC, it would go under my passenger seat and be wired straight to the battery with the DVD burner placed inside my arm rest and mounted.

I'm currently weighing the pros and cons of both systems but I'm pretty sure I will be going with the Mini setup and not getting the superdrive and just getting the combo and another external HDD for cheap and using the drive in the Mini for the time being.

Hope you enjoy . This will be posted in the Newbie forum as well so it will get a little more attention.

~$500 for a minimac, you can overclock the ***** from 1.25 to 1.5ghz no prob. Splurge for an airport card ($80), and BT if u need it
$80 for summore ram to boost to 512.
    $300 for touchscreen
$0.00 find an ol large HD for media and use the stock one for OSX
    no keyboard, no mouse

Me, im just buying a mini for the cost factor, then using what i got to jack it up to a respectable carputer form and spending $300 on a touchscreen, what else do you need? GPS? another $100 or so

In the end $1000 is a better figure for my tastes, not $1300

Look for deals, look on ebay, **** is cheap anywhere u go if u look for the right things.

OH YEAH, and of course a PSU, and another deep cycle battery to keep it in sleep mode while Im not driving. So maybe $1200 is better, but u gotta do it right.

The mini I have spec'ed does have the airport and the bluetooth and the 512 memory. I would love to get a $300 touch screen and save myself the $200 bucks but security issues and also I don't think the touch screen will fit ideally in my truck. It will look retarded if I mount it.

Yea GPS is one thing I did leave out which I will be getting after I get everything installed first and $100 seems a little much. HDD, I need atleast 120GB, I have tons of movies and pushing 7500 MP3s. There's also going to be a dock on my console with a spring loaded holder for my iPod Mini.

Glad to see you are joining us in this community:-)

GPS will be around $100 or more. There are not many GPS types that are mac friendly unforutnately.

how about a fold out touch screen?

I've been a mac user for a long time and the mac mini is what finally gave me the shot in the arm to get moving on building a car computer system. A couple things are keeping me in limbo on choosing between pc/mac, probably the same for others out there.. GPS, OBDII and a nice GUI to tie everything together. I'm sure once the mac apps have progresed further they will be awesome, but for now the PC has so much more to choose from. I'm going to build the system with my pc laptop while buying hardware that will eventually allow for use with a mac based system.

I hate to say that I'm putting a pc in my car since I'm such a mac guy. My friends are going to laugh at me. Maybe I'll throw the g5 in the passenger seat... (jk)

I was in Circuit Sity on saturday and finally saw a MM in person... It is amazing! The size is REALLY cool, and I could totally picture sticking that in my dash and using the slot-loading dvd from it!

HOWEVER, what are you guys doing about GPS, and a good frontend? So far I have seen a few efforts, but too early for my taste... Also, there is no possibility of 5.1 sound right?

Any ideas for putting a PC in this? :)

5.1 surround can be had by adding the Griffin Firewave http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/firewave/

I intend to either use Route 66 for GPS or try virtual PC and run a Windows GPS app. I know VPC runs slow but it's not molasses and I only use GPS when I don't know where I'm going. Don't generally run it every day.

I'm really looking forward to putting the MM in my truck. I haven't used MacOS in a while though so hopefully I don't run into any snafoos while installing. I plan on using the MM on my desk for a while until I put it in my truck. Thank god for the Mac forum and the MM or I'd be using Winblows

                  Mac Mini Install

                  Guys,
Boy is it good to see some more Mac Heads around, and I am sure glad to see you've had the same idea that the MM is an ideal carputer. Anyway just a couple of things I wanted to throw out for you. AG Gigaport external USB soundcard. Small, USB, Plug and Play, Mac Compatible and instant 5.1 surround sound in DTS and Dolby Pro Logic ... check it out. Next if you don't want VPC which is dead slow and crap for running external apps, have you considered this. Remote Desktop Client for Mac. It can be downloaded for free from Microsoft's Site. Install it on the Mini with you DVD Drive, 5.1 sound and other peripherals. Then buy a basic low end simple Mini-ITX card with minimum ram and HDD and nothing else. Connect the ITX and MM by crossover cable and run the PC apps remotely from the MM. At 100 Mbps you'll hardly know it isn't a direct connection !!!

                  Paul.

I have never given a Mac a chance (well, since grade school anyway!) and probably wont in the near future, but it is awesome to see that the Mac community is growing. That new mini is AWESOME! If I was going to be in the market, that would be on top of my list

i used to be the same way, the last time I had used one was os8 or 9 and it was to do video editing, but it sucked to me then.... but i was able to mess with osX when my developer started the imeedia project and I am switched for sure.... osX in my opinion is better than windows by far... you should try it, and see for yourself.... i bet you switch... my son has all his friends wanting one now since they have seen our Mac Mini, its pretty funny to hear a 14yr old kid come in and say "dude, im getting a mac! that is the bomb!"

LOL! Yea I'm with you on the OS8 and 9 stuff HybridMike. I couldn't really stand it to be honest, OSX is amazing and I really wish I was using a MAC now instead of a PC. Thank god for the Mac Mini so I can actually have a stable operating system in my truck.

Obviously my only concern is software but I like vr4's idea about putting the mini-ITX in the car and doing a remote desktop type application. Would require quite a bit more power but with the MM already on the low consumption level it actually wouldn't be that bad. Now if only I can find a place to put it...

Why is everyone stuck on this whole mac mobo being so small? ITS ABOUT THE COST OF THE MAC MINI!? YES!?

I said it before Ill say it again, the mac mini is a boon because of its cost, not the size. You can shoehorn even an OLD 386 mobo and some huge slot cards into a box that fits in yer car. Just cuz the Mini is MINI dont make it the ideal mac for carputers, its just the only choice when you think of costs...

Any G4 motherboard, functioning with a CPU, would cost $400+ on ebay and be only 500Mhz maybe. So many of the G4 towers (until recently) were HUGE turbine fans, ie needed cooling bad. not good for carputer.

To me its the cost that puts the Mini on a pedestal. NOT THE FRIGGIN SIZE!

To all that are retarded enough to buy memory from Apple:

You realize you will be paying roughly $200 more per stick than the stick actually costs? You are better off just getting the base model and the airport/bluetooth module. Dont waste money on a bigger hard drive, because its gonna be silly to have that many Mp3s to sort through while driving, actually its plain stupid. But of all things, don't waste your cash on extra memory from Apple. Its like prision rape.

And yes I am an avid Mac fan, I just am not a fan of rape
