  • mini mac compatibility with head unit.

    hello all.

i am in the process of installing new speakers, amps, etc. into my car along with my Eclipse Av5101 head unit, which is essentially a 5.8" screen and brain with outputs. i really like the unit, the quality of sound from the eclipse is fantastic, however, i do not have a cd or dvd player, and i would like to buy an all in one unit and install it into my dash underneath the eclipse. eclipse dvd players are extremely expensive, so i have been looking at the mini mac. my question is, could i run the mini mac with my eclipse? all i am really looking for is the cd/dvd and hard drive, i am not concerned with internet capability and i think i could use this remote system rather than needing a touch screen. so what do you guys think i would need to make this happen? thanks.

Sounds like what you need is a Ipod and a DVD player. For what you want to do a carputer is overkill.

really? even if i buy off ebay? to me having a dvd/cd and hard drive is awesome in itself and with the possibility of GPS later sounds like a good deal to me. the dvd player that is designed for my headunit is about 700 bucks...plus it doesnt play dvdr. and i have an iriver h320, which i like a lot more than the ipod, however, i do not enjoy picking it up and scrolling through all the files while trying to watch the road.

What type of inputs (audio and video) does the Eclipse have? It would need a vga or dvi input to have a crisp enough image for text. It would probably be ok for dvd playing, though.

That HU does not have a VGA input, only composite. Videos will be ok, but good luck reading maps and text off that screen from the computer. Theres a reason why almost no one here uses that type of HU. Besides, there is not much choice of navi apps for the mac.

oh yeah... If a carputer is what you really want, I would highly reccomend selling that HU and installing a real VGA monitor.

New to the CarPC world. I currently have a Sony Double Din Headunit and would like a PC. Looking into doing a MacMini. Can I use my Headunit has power for the sound system and the screen for my MacMini it is a WVGA screen.
