  • Steering wheel controls

I am trying to plan my whole carputer setup before I start. With that said I was wondering if I were to replace my headunit (radio) in my car and use a mac mini in its place, is there anyway to integrate the steering wheel controls or should I just kiss them goodbye?

not sure with the Mac but on a Windows based system you can hack up either a keyboard controller or a gamepad to interface your steering controls.

would you put the keyboard under the buttons on the steering wheel or would you some how splice them in to the wire coming from the buttons?

You can hack up a keyboard controller and solder the buttons to existing switches on your steering controls, but this may not be possible on the Mac, depends on how the Keyboard controller works.

The link below may help explain better:

I have a pac swix connector that reads what buttons I push on the steering wheel and the emits a remote signal. The swix has learning functionality and can learn all remote inputs. Is there any ir remotes for macs that this could possible work with?

I believe an IPAC controller will also work, although it is a wired solution. It basically can take switches for inputs and emulates them as keypresses. They claim it is compatible with the Macintosh.

I once owned an IPAC, but never had a Mac to test it on.

I think you probably would want either the Express Remote or the Remote for iTunes

The Digital Media Remote doesn't work with your media player if it is in the background. Otherwise, yes, the SWIX and Keyspan combo should work. You also need to place the SWIX IR emitter and the Keyspan IR receiver where they have line-of-sight visibility to each other.

What about: But a 8/8/8 Phidgets interface board and a volt-meter sensor. And hook the voltmeter up to the buttons. All you have to do is make an app that reads the voltages and it will route each functions. That is what i am going to do with my cruise control. It will do VOL +/- Next Prev track and Mute / and On/Off

So, I got a SWI-X and the Keyspan receiver. It was painful installing the SWI-X.

Now I can't figure out how to get the Keyspan USB receiver to recognize signals from anything. My understanding is that the Keyspan software loads .REM files which contain the IR patterns that it matches to recognize specific keys being pressed on the remote. Now, the PAC-SWIX doesn't have a corresponding .REM file because it's not a TV remote control (the Keyspan remote only has 3 remotes). So, how do I create a pattern matching .REM file so that the Keyspan software does something?

As far as I understand this is what you can theoretically do. First set up the keyspan for you computer, with all the buttons programed on the remote control. Once this is done the remote "should" emit different IR signals the keyspan receiver picks up and tells the computer what to do, make sure to test it out. The swix controller works by learning the IR signal from other IR devices emitting devices and stores them for later use. So if you hook up your swix connector properly, which is a pain and took me a couple tries. It should be ready to be programed and tell it what car we have. To program the swix connecter follow their directions but now use the keyspan media remote instead of an HU remote to teach it what you want it to do. I haven't done this myself I have just planned out how I am going to install everything. In theory this should work flawlessly, just make sure you are programming it correctly it was a ***** for me. I hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

                            I just bought this:
                            http://www.xkeys.com/custom/xkmatrix.php
Then took an old palm keyboard and modded it to use with the x-keys thing, i will post some pics later. but you can take the x-keys board and hook up any swtich to it and program a function to each button.

here are some pics of what i did. I could not mod the original board so i desided to make my own from a radioshack PCB kit; All the little double lines are switchs that i will hook up to the x-keys board. you can do the same but with the switches that are already there...
