  • Interesting behavior today...Carnetix Problem?

So I go out to the car, start it up and head for work. The Mini wakes up as usual and I'm listening to music. About 3 minutes into the trip the music "sticks" like it does when you listen to a scratched CD, just repeats the same 1/4 second of music over and over and over again.

I figure, hmm. Maybe I've finally gotten a bad sector on the disk. When I look at the screen, I have the DREADED BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH. Yikes!

I'm thinking, okay, I haven't rebooted for a couple of weeks, who knows. So, because I can't reach my power button, I pull over, shut the car off and wait for the Carnetix P1900 to yank the power. Then I'll restart, reboot, and see what's what.

The P1900 never did pull the power! I gave up after 2 minutes and restarted the car. No change. Finally, I stopped again and undocked the Mini, then redocked it and restarted the car. Bong! It started up, booted up normally and off I went with the exact same tune playing properly, so no bad sectors, I think.

I'm starting to think it was some kind of transient problem with the P1900 that caused the lockup. I suspect that since it failed to shut the computer down when I turned the car off. Now, my Mini is programmed to sleep but the screen is hooked up to the PSU as well and it should have turned off after 45 seconds but it didn't.

Anyone else ever see this kind of behavior?

I am having a smiliar problem...kinda. When I come out to the car in the morning..or sometimes only an hour or 2 after the car has been off....the computer is booting from scratch. I gueess it is just loosing power while the car is off for some reason. I too amusing the P1900...and had no problems until a few weeks ago. Also...for some reason all of the sudden I am not getting the turn on "bong" noise...then again i dont remember if i ever was with the usb sound card. If anyone has any input it would be great!!

Check the sound control panel to make sure that the outputs are set to your USB device.

Shutting down after just 2 hours or so could be an issue with your battery. The P1900 shuts down if the voltage drops too low. Do you think your battery is old?

Does it sleep properly if you just shut the car off for a few minutes and then restart it?

If not, check in the Power Saver panel to be sure your Mini is set to sleep when the power button is pushed.

        Mac Startup sound ("bong"-Sound)

AFAIK, the startup sound will always come out of the internal speaker. I have been using my mac mini with my tv set before, and even when the headphone jack was plugged in, or when using my iMic USB Sound card, the startup sound always came from the internal speaker.

My bad. You're right. Same is true for my iMic.

I get the same kind of thing. Most of the time I'll crank up the vehicle and
the Mac wakes right up out of sleep mode, but every so often the Mac boots from scratch, and sometime it's after short down time (an hour or so). I wouldn't think my battery voltage is dropping that soon, but maybe so.

I also have noticed that the P1900 will sometimes wait longer than 6 seconds to put the Mac into sleep mode (as much as a minute or two). Not a big deal, but just an observation (the P1900 seems to have a few quarks).

Does anyone else's mini get a few seconds of blank-screen about 5 or 10 seconds after waking from sleep mode? It also sounds like the internal hard drive spins down for those few seconds as well. Everything works fine after that. I was thinking this may be normal, but just want to see if anyone else experiences this.

I used to expierence the same behaviour, including the boot up from scratch, then one morning the P1900 continously sent the mini a shut down signal. The mini would power off. I'm still debugging my P1900 and Mike at carnetix has been very helpful. I think I owe him some LED fault codes.
