  • New OS X Frontend - Need Graphics Designer

I've been working for the past few months on a new frontend for OS X. Due to the slow "death" of C-Car Project and the limitations of the i3 front end, I created my own. I've been a developer for the past 9 years and have some heavy OS X development experience.

I have most of the backend for audio and video completed, as well as several other features as well.

HOWEVER, I don't have any kind of usable "eye-candy" GUI yet. I'm a developer, not a designer. I'm looking for some input and help on the graphics before I release this to the public here on the forums.

Basically, I'd appreciate any help if anyone is interested. Some photo mockups for the main interface, buttons, backgrounds, music player, video player, etc...

I obviously am familiar with all the other frontend for Windows. I have used most of them at one point or another on my mini-ITX machine. But I don't want to just flat out copy those GUI's.

Any help and/or feedback is appreciated.

i have the perfect idea, i was going to learn coding to make my own front end but since i suck at coding how about you code the interface my friend and i are making, it should be done by tommorow. He is pretty damn good at photoshop and makes websites for people so his interface should be very good. im so glad you posted! because it would be way too hard for me to learn to code. the website for the frontend i was going to make is in my sig. but it should be a good GUI. so ill post it by friday hopefully, thanks also do u have AIM or something or pm me your email adress, thanks

        hookid,

you can email me at cpjolicoeur[at]gmail[dot]com

        also, my AIM is "cpjolicoeur"

email is best because I'm not always on IM.

I looked at your site but see you don't have any screenshots up yet. I'd be interested in talking with you and seeing what you have. Maybe we cant hookup and combine our work.

        Viper24,

same thing. You have my email here, so send me an email so I have your address and I'll be in touch with you for some graphics work if I need it.

Thanks for the interest guys. If anyone else is intersted I'd love to hear from you. The more people with input, the better.

I posted this a few days ago:
          http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=69383

As I said, I too, started working on a front-end for Mac but stopped as I found you guys already have gone far with the development. I just didn’t find any point to carry on redundant work. I’m actually not a graphics designer, I’m in networking and system programming within Unix world for last 7/8 years but I also have some good knowledge of designing stuffs. PS is my one of the most favourite hobby. I started making this front-end:

I can carry on working on this if you guys like my design. I can also help you guys for programming but I don’t have any experience with Xcode (learning now) but C++. As viper24 said, I can also host the project from my own server (it’s Linux). I’m happy to do that. hookid is probably working on his own front-end too. Why don’t we come together and make THE BEST for the world?

cpjolicoeur, my original plan was to use the whole picture as the base and create some invisible push button (in interface builder) on every clickable part of the interface to make it touch screen friendly. That’s why the whole background is single layered now. If we like to create some “inset” effect every time user clicks a button then I need to make those buttons separately and you got change the picture on fly. Let me know what else you need. I’ve already sent the file to you anyway. Cheers!!!

                    macusers,

I never recieved the email with your PSD file. Send it to

                    cpjolicoeur[at]gmail[dot]com

I'm going to use a background image in the interface builder when I'm creating all the *nib files. So we will need some "push down" graphics to overlay when the user actually selects each option.

I was thinking about some wave effect (like when you add dashboard widgets) instead of push down effect. What you guys think about that idea?

Sorry for the silence guys. I was on business Saturday and then dealing with the blizzard here yesterday.

I appreciate all the great feedback so far. Really, its been more than I expected and has really helped.

Macuser > I don't know about doing the wave effect. I'll have to look and see if I can find some examples of how Apple does that with the widgets. It's got to be some kind of core image functions. Also, the wave effect doesn't happen on the mac mini because of the lower graphics card that is installed. So if most mac cars are using the mini, the wave effect wouldn't even been an option.

                            > I agree that the OEM look is always nice and a classic look. I'm just trying to get more ideas to see if we can improve on the standard look. I don't want anything absctract or so graphical that its annoying and not functional.

I did not know that as I still don't have a Mini yet (awaiting on Monday, next week). In that case, we should go for "push down" effect.

I agree that the OEM look is always nice and a classic look.
100% agree with that and that's why I'm trying to make it as OEM as possible. I think, with all the appropriate buttons and icons it’ll look like just like an OEM. I think a bit of “OS X like” gonna be cool. Most of the available carputer s/w are Windows based. So the look & feel gonna be a bit different.
