  • Gesture based front end?

I used xGestures to control Frontrow on my long road trip.
    http://stout.hampshire.edu/~bjk02/xGestures/

I found it to run Front row in a very intuitive fashion.
(download it and try it out)

I just run my hand from left to right to skip to the next song. Run it down to turn volume down, and move right then down for select.
It didn't require me to actually look at the screen to locate a button, something that is required no matter how large the button is.

I think that a Front Row style interface with more functionality geared towards CarPC's would be awsome combined with a gesture program.

The only limitations of xGesture that I would like to see would be assignable gesture areas, such as moving your finger along the right edge for volume, and along the left for track selection.

i wonder if they make something like streetdecks palm type gestures that you could hook into frontrow....that would be perfect

I installed this on Friday and used gestures on my weekend road trip. I was very happy using gestures to control Route 66 and iTunes (the two programs I use).

It was much harder to gesture on the touch screen while moving than it was to gesture with my mouse on the desktop so I had difficulty when I started off in the car. I had complicated gestures that I parred down to one or sometimes two strokes to get it to work reliably while moving.

Does anybody know if I can use a script to turn this and or other system prefrences on when I start the mini in the car?
        Installed:
Lilliput 7" w/ TS * Kenwood head unit interface
        Deluo GPS * BR3 OBD-II * P-1900

Mac mini * Dell Latitude 600m

I wrote an Applescript for turning xGestures on.

          -- Open xGestures Preference Pane

          do shell script "open /Library/PreferencePanes/xGestures.prefPane"
delay 1 -- give time for the pref pane to open

          -- Start xGestures

          tell application "System Events"
          tell process "System Preferences"
          tell window "xGestures"
keystroke (ASCII character 9) -- Tab
keystroke (ASCII character 9) -- Tab
keystroke (ASCII character 9) -- Tab
          keystroke (ASCII character 29)
click button "Start xGestures" of tab group 1
          end tell
          end tell
          end tell

          -- Exit System Preferences

tell application "System Preferences" to quit
          Installed:
Lilliput 7" w/ TS * Kenwood head unit interface
          Deluo GPS * BR3 OBD-II * P-1900

I thought it already has a option to run automaticly.
Mine does, and I didn't make a script to get it to launch.

I use my mini as a desktop and a carputer. The above script is part of the application I run at startup that either sets the mini up for one situation or the other. When I had xGestures turned on with the left mouse button I couldn't drag anything, and that was a real drag on a desktop.

Hotch I like your gestures, but I didn't see any setting to do the Ratings or FFW in itunes, or did I just miss that? (as I use the ratings a lot to sort my library)
NM, I see you used it combined with sizzling keys...Ill go find it.

ShaneFK, you can set XGestures to be application specific, mine only reacts inside front-rowm, outside your mouse works like normal.

Well, zapwizard, I guess you don't have any use for that script.

Where is Front Row on the hard drive? I want to set a gesture to open it, but I can't find it to link to it. I also wanted to set application specific gestures. Also...how did you get it to fast forward?
