    UPDATES ON PAGE 2

This update is a big one. The keyboard will start as a small(ish) pair of translucent "always on top" buttons. Clicking them will call up the keyboard or quit the app. Again to get the keyboard to disappear double drag the text out of the text box.

Test out and tell me what you guys think.

(Mods if you think this should be united with the other thread, I have no problems with that...but I'd like the ability to change the title of the thread).

so... once i type something in there, how can i use it?

it would be slick if there were a button to dump it into whatever text box was the focus

It looks cool, but how do you use it? After typing something in, how do you get it to the text box you want to send it to?

After you type something in it you have two options...

        1) drag the already highlighted text to the box you want it to be in...the keyboard remains visible.

        2) drag the already highlighted text to the right a bit...drop it...then drag the still highlighted text out of the keyboard window...this makes the keyboard disappear and pops the "always on top" buttons back.

I agree that dumping the text into the text box in focus would be awesome. However, I don't think this is possible with applescript. It would take some serious obj-c that would cover all the varieties of text box one could possibly encounter. I could be wrong on this and if I am I'd love to hear how so we can make this a possibility.

i can't drag selected text... even if i could, it wouldn't be xGestures compatible... there needs to be a better way to do this... what about a copy/paste button? you touch it, it copies the text, shrinks the box, then pastes 5 seconds later

Translucency is sort of faked in windows XP. In vista there will be a real compositor and transparency will be something accessible at a high level. For now the only way i've been able to do transparency has been "expensive". Basically you have to take a screen shot of what is behind the window and update it periodically. This has probably been written into an API of some sort somewhere, but I can't think of one off hand. I have been able to recreate this effect in java using the robot class to take screenshots of sections of a screen.

FYI in applescript the way to make a window transparent is this:

set alpha value of window "your window name here" to 0.8

You should probably do this in an on will finish launching statement or on open.

wasn't aware of that issue w/ windows...i have several apps on my work desktops that use transparency- just don't know how they do it.

Yeah when I drag the text it REFUSES to go into the text box.....I just drag it and it disappears. When you say "double drag" what does that mean? Something about doing it to the right or something? Can you post a screenshot of it? Thanks.

I just downloaded this and tested it out on the PowerBook - basically I could get it to work by dragging the text out of the input box to the desktop (creating a finder file with the word in it) - then selecting the new word file in Finder and selecting Edit-Copy and then pasting it into the text box I want the text in... of course I was using a mouse instead of the touchscreen in my Jeep, but I think it would work the same way. If there was a copy button on the keyboard next to the clear button, that might be more efficient.

Nice work so far... look forward to seeing new versions in the future. Thank you for your effort - it is greatly appreciated!!

The consensus seems to be that you all want a copy button. I think I'll put it to the right side of the text box in the keyboard window. It will copy the text to the clipboard (is that what its called on mac?) and swap the keyboard window out for the little always on top window. Then you can paste the text to any text box you want with whatever method you want (gesture, key, strange scripting with a double tap, whatever). Look for it in a few...I'm finally moving this week.

Also, I think some people arent understanding my instructions for dragging stuff out of the text box on the keyboard window into the text box in another application. I set it up so the text that you type is pre-highlighted (blue). To get it out of there all you should have to do is click-and-hold and drag it out into any text recieving thing. Try it. Also try this: click-and-hold-and-drag the text within the text box (of the keyboard window) to the right a bit. Then release it. Then click-and-hold-and-drag it a little bit again but don't release it. You should notice that the mouse pointer changes to include a little green plus sign. Once it does this you can (while continuing to drag) move the mouse out of the bounds of the keyboard window and the keyboard window will move out of your way so you can plop the text down wherever you want. (I hope this causes one of those lightbulb moments somewhere). If this isn't working give me a PM or post here and i'll see what i can do. (might have something to do with your touchscreen setup...maybe you have it set to double tap to drag or something (like a laptop touchpad) and that's causing this. I wouldn't know I don't have a touchscreen yet. I will soon though as i'm going to trade my psp for one soon after moving to my new house.)

sti-- what i'm thinking about doing is using this together with sizzling keys to pull up playlists and search for songs, etc... which would really require an easier way to use it (like i suggested, have it copy, then paste 5 seconds later)
