  • USB shutdown/power on

Has anyone looked at how one powers up and shuts down a mac via usb? The one thing I could find was the USB power button that states it won't work on anything newer than an iMac DV400. Seems like there must be a way, as our APC UPS's at work have the ability to shut down and I believe restart our G5 XServe at work via USB....

EDIT Come to think of it, I know it shuts down but not sure about starting back up.....

    Well, here is something....

    http://devworld.apple.com/documentat...section_9.html

Not sure how one would exploit, but:
    Control-Eject: Display Shutdown/Restart/Sleep Dialog
    Control-Command_Eject: Restart Immedately (reset)
    Control-Command-Option-Eject: Shut Down Immediately

Seems to work on my eMac Ghz G4, even though note is for PM G5.

Also looks like Command-Option-Eject will sleep and wake.

Well, wake up is really easy. I accidentally wake up my Mini all the time. Just keep a keyboard or a mouse connected to it and click a key or press a button and it will wake up. Then you have to get the whole mess synched up so it doesn't sleep when you start the car and wake when you shut it off :-)

As for shutdown, I'm not sure. You can do it with an Applescript, you may even be able to do it by voice with speakable items that execute a command or script.

        keyboard hack

i've seen several guys rip apart an USB keyboard and wire up switches to the various pins that make keys and key combos... suppose you could trace those startup/shutdown/reset shortcuts and wire a switch to do each of those things.
        Et ipsa scientia potestas est.

Better yet, use an iPac keyboard emulator (www.ultimarc.com). Works great.
