  • mac mini, bluetooth and standard front end..

Im thinking of using something like media central or front row as the front end to my system, as I am going to use a simple griffin imate controller with my standard non-touch screen monitor.. I should be able to map enough key strokes for what I want to do day-to-day, and keep a wireless keyboard in the glove compartment for when I need more.. I like the simplicity of these and also the "standard" and uncluttered look

Ontop of the music/video/photo's that I want to run, I also need to be able to run handsfree... I have seen BluePhoneElite and think thats what most people here are running. I can cope for the time being without output to mic/speakers as my phone has a speakerphone option, but that will be a nice development when that arrives; I think its due with v2?..

I would like to be able to boot straight into my front end (media central/front row) however Id like to have a menu pick from within there to access BPE.. Has anyone modified either media central or front row to add extra app's to the top level menu? Im guessing its not a major change to do something like that, however Im no programmer and so have no idea if its possible/how to do it

Ive done a search, but not found any mention of this, and cant see anything regarding customising front row menu's on the net.. if anyone can help, Id be really grateful..

PS.. There are a couple of people out there who have asked this question on other forums, but Ive not seen a decent answer, so if Im asking somthing impossible, please feel free to set a on me

its very difficult to modify front row seeing as its made by apple. media central is so big that it prob is just as complicated. i think your going to be hard pressed to get a programer to work for you budy.
Cant code cause I dont know how, but give me the paint bucket and my eraser and have at you!

no, I wasnt planning on bribing someone to do it for me, just wondered if there was an easy way it could be done like in some preferences settings or hidden menu's... Ive not been able to find anything on the net, so assumed not, but just thought Id ask here as a last resort..

I think AMP is probably the best bet for you. All that needs to be done is to add keystroke mappings to it. This shouldn't be very hard to get Aychamo to do. It's probably a matter of simply giving him a list of them and asking him to add them to the current code base.

My touchscreen is currently dead and I run using a Griffin powermate. I've tried it two different ways. I coded a front end and put key commands in it and controlled it that way. I've also used a combination of programs to run reasonably cleanly with just iTunes.

A third way could be to set the Powermate up to issue the proper keyboard commands when FrontRow is on the screen, using the hack that gives you keyboard control over it. I haven't actually tried that, but it seems like you could set it up easily.

How about MediaCentral. Something like 39.95 but you can use your keyboard.

yeah front row seems nice and easy to navigate around, and seems really well suited for the powermate, however im not sure what the deal is with getting from there into something like blue phone elite to make a call.. Id like to be able to do that easily without having to out of front row (or whatever other front end) hence wondering if I could add a menu item at the top level

I like media central too, and think that would be better for me than front row, however again Im not sure I can add a link to another app to the top level..

I dont really want to install loads of different apps onto my ibook to try them out, but Im thinking I might put some of them onto my mini (when it arrives) and give it a try using just the controller before installing in the car.. I was looking at AMP this afternoon, and that might be an even better solution again; I will have a play

                thanks for your responses

You def. can not add a new app to the top level menus of FrontRow. I hope this doesn't sound rude, but is using BPE really easeir than opening your cellphone and dialing the number? I know with my phone it takes about 2 seconds (literally) to open my phone, get the number, and dial it. I can't imagine it being any faster or easier if I was using the computer to do it.

yeah its not any easier i had bFE2 in my car with an external mic and it was crap, yes you can do voice dialing but to get it to work right was horribly difficult. getting your phone to stay linked up is just so much effort. just get a phone that has a phone book and just use that to dial.

Doesn't AMP allow plug-ins that can act as application launchers? I haven't tried it but I thought that you could put a prog like BPE and launch it from the plug in menu?

it would be fine that someone gets it to work with AMP or MediaCentral
indeed it's possibile to make it work with Mediacentral since the application can run also in windowed mode.

Basically I have a standard BMW handsfree arm-rest and charging cradle, which puts the phone horizontally between the front seats which makes it a bit arkward to get to. With the BMW bluetooth system you can just dial from on screen so I was thinking of setting something similar up through the mac

As for the on screen keyboard, I dont have a touchscreen, so not much use, however a number pad would be ok, as I could just scroll around it and click (a full keyboard would be too many buttons for scrolling I think)

Perhaps running amp and having it launch an application like BPE (I only mention BPE as thats the one I have managed to find for osx and seems to be mentioned most on this site) would be the best solution
