  • A couple questions before I finish install

Currently I have my mac mini hooked up to a 500gb lacie external. All my movies, music, pics, etc are stored on this drive. I plan on permanently installing everything so I don't have to full with moving it in and out. so here's my questions.

    1. is there another harddrive that I can purchase with a higher capacity? I believe I only have an 80gb running in my G4 ppc. has anyone tried this? I really don't care if I have to change the case I just want to maximum storage possible that will still function under the mac os x and handle it's self well in the car.

    2. I'm looking for a way to syncronize my two itunes setups. my perfect world would be able to set certain rules for different cirumstances. example:

I want my car to hold any song or movie with a rating of 3 stars or higher on it's internal drive. I also want to be able to select an amount of unrated so I can rate them in the car. so my mini would be holding all 3 stars and up and 1000 unrated songs.

the sync part is what baffles me, ideally I would like to be able to pull up outside my house and hit a button in AMP (or where ever) and these task be preformed automatically via wifi.

the mini would upload all the ratings that had been changed and delete the songs under three stars on it's internal drive. then download the difference between the songs that I rated and the songs that were left unrated from the last sync.

It would also be neat to be able to drag and drop playlist and/or smart playlists from the house to the car.

Is this possible? If someone is interested in doing some co-op coding please let me know. This is something that would blow the windoz systems away.

The 200GB 2.5" disks are out now. I don't know if there is a firmware limit as to what the G4 Minis will support (my old dual 800 G4 tower only supports up to 120GB drives and Apple says that can't be changed ). I haven't looked into them, but I would guess that is a 5400 RPM drive (which is probably what you have now anyway).

You have a nifty idea there. I have played with a similar idea (but just going from house -> car and not back), but I never went very far with it (I wrote the source utility that would pull all the files for a playlist onto a removable disk (e.g. iPod in my case), but never wrote the part to import them on the target host. It would also drop all play count and rating info the way I was doing it).

I'm going to try to find some research material on this. I don't know anything about coding, but maybe if I gather enough informationa light buble will turn on for someone else

I tried to run an external hd on an invertor, and an external usb powered 2.5in hd.... While using the P1900 the mac behaved very strangely with both attached...

So now i just run the usb power and usb transfer leads so i can import what i choose when i chhoes from the external and then i disconnect....

I hope you manage to sort out what you want to do, but i got the hump with it and gave up....

I had suggested this idea a few months back, not sure if it is going to be implemented or not...

Seems like with the new iTunes you can do it over your iPod now...

Seems like it might only work with songs purchased from the itunes store...

                "Buy into sync
So, you’re driving and you hear a brilliant song on the radio. You get home, log on to iTunes, and buy the song for 99. Then you sync it to your iPod. But what if you want to hear that song at work? Now you can, with reverse sync. Connect your iPod to any authorized computer — iTunes lets you authorize up to five — and you can sync everything you purchased from the iTunes Store back to it.(1)"

Right, but according to the Apple page, the synchronization only works for songs purchased from the iTunes store.

You know, this is a pretty simple problem to solve but it's one that all of us share. One of us should get busy writing a synchronization program. Ahem. [*cough* probably me *cough*]

And there are already loads of them out there..... Lol

In reality all it allows you to do is save the stuff on the ipod while it is in a hard drive state so you can see it back again....

Have seen loads of them for free, or very little money...

Will have a look and post some up when i get the chance...
