  • Ipad compatible head unit?

Hey everyone, i was talking with a friend who wants to give his first shot in the mobile pc world a try with the ipad, the installation and fabrication portion is still in planning phase but he is basically set on the idea of having a headunit that will be able to control the ipad to a degree (change songs, volume) and so forth, as for me so far i have no expierence with the ipad and havent seen anything that would be able to function like the way he wants.

Iv shown him a bluetooth controller i saw bugbyte posted in another forum, but he wasnt really interested in it since he is still stuck on the head unit idea so if anybody has any other ideas or seen a product that can do these things, please share =D!!

    Thanks!

Doesn't exist...and nothing in the works for it by any major manufacturer. It would be a giant step backwards

Forgive me here.... but why would you want to install a giant ipod (ipad) with a 10" screen then control it with a head unit's tiny display and buttons? The functionality you're referring to here sounds like it would be better served with an regular ipod and any aftermarket deck that has ipod control functionality built in

I was going to ask this question but I just knew the answer would be senseless.

so everyone is saying the control commands over usb are different for the ipad then they are for the other apple products that i can control with a "Apple iPod Ready" head unit?

i think that this is just as justifiable as allowing a head unit to control a car computer...

everyone saying that it is dumb idea is making me want to do it...

plenty of people think my car pc is dumb-- that only motivates me to make it better...

if they are different, so be it. if they aren't any different, it is a great idea(not any worse then some other ideas), and there are plenty of ipod ready head units, so he could take his pick.

              edit:
according to some assumptions from these links:
              http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/ipod_pinout.shtml
              http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_s...audi_ipod.html
              http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/...nd_iPhone_dock

i would say that the ipad uses the same control commands, so should work with many different head units.

Well, I just don't see the point. Controlling a small iPod touch or something cheaper makes sense but it seems pretty silly to make it a secondary device to a HU.

I don't see the point. There's cheaper ways to accomplish the same thing.

hard to believe i am trying to be the voice of reason...

a standard, all-new-parts car pc goes for about $700-1,000, and there were/are plenty of people that connected them to these car2pc adapters(car2pc is still around, so they must be selling something..) to do literally the exact same thing as the OP is asking about, even though the carpc is more expensive then most of the headunits, and can run a much larger screen(if you had the room, you could run a 42" off a carpc) then the ipad...

i always wondered why anyone would use that car2pc thing... but at the same time, i can understand wanting to have everything integrate together..

in my days of home theater, people loved to have the lighting controlled by the same remote as their home theater--"so everything is integrated together." i always thought it was partially dumb, but they wanted it, so in it went... that was a $2,000 remote system, controlling a $20 light switch that they could press while leaving/entering the room...

                  edge2k:
i would say to grab a ipod ready head unit--one with the 30 pin adapter, instead of a usb connection(or try both and let us know!), and give it a shot. the pinouts of the connections all seem to be the same, so at the worst, it appears that it just wouldn't work at all..

not sure where your at in the country, but i have a working, but broken 2-3yo pioneer (busted speaker/rca outputs-- whine on all channels, but all other features work normally), and P-bus ipod adapter that i would be willing to loan to you if you want something to test with..

Okay, good point soundman. Now it's my turn to sound like and idiot. I really didn't think this through since I don't use the iPad like a "big iPod touch" and it really didn't occur to me that it would work the same way. Dunno why - you're obviously most likely right.

And, I suppose if you already OWN an iPad but not an iPod or whatever, then it wouldn't be totally insane to think that you might want to plug it in to a head unit.

it might be nice if you want to use steering wheel controls for skipping tracks on the ipad. as long as the stereo doesnt limit functionality of the ipad then i think it would be pretty cool if the ipad was mounted in the dash and you had it connected to a head unit via usb.
