  • iPad Front End App in Development

Hey there, so i was a user a while back, when i did up my 2000 Mitsubishi Galant with a 7" touchscreen, and the UI i used was very similar to what i am going to develop for the iPad. I would love your feedback, this is my first draft of the UI, just thought about doing this again today so here is a mockup.

I plan to integrate the OBD II capabilities into the main screen along with its own screen for gauges. those will follow.

I was also going to allow full customization of almost every button, allowing example NAV to control whichever nav app you use. so if you choose tom tom, it would just open tom tom, and if you dont have a gps it would use google maps.

the same would be for music - ipod, pandora, last.fm, streaming apps

video also - ipod, youtube, vlc etc

radio i would use programs like tunein radio

web would just be a web browser, but customizable to a number of other options

and of course the center logo would be whichever brand you like..

I think it looks great! A good addition would be the feature to use gestures where the center logo is. Example: tap to play/paus, swipe left/right for next/previous song. Also, it would be great if you could open the nav, radio, music apps within this front end, instead of skipping to app if possible. If you need a beta tester, I'll be glad to help.

Also, I like the idea for the two different colors. Based on time, it could use the lighter one during the day and darker one at night. Are you planning to make it for Jailbreakers or Stock? The reason I ask is because if the ipad is jailbroken, you can add the option for it to automatically open when it senses power and pause and lock when power off. This way it can work off accessory power from vehicle to funtion as a complete front end.

Another feature, would be incorporating notifications, such as new email, etc...

Count me in for beta testing as well! If you need any help with this let me know, I'd be glad to help in the design/ testing phase.

Thanks for the replies, I am currently looking into the apple dev license, the problem being i work for apple, so i am still going to try and develop the app, i am just unsure if it will be allowed in the app store, due to the fact that apple will own any rights to apps i create up until 1 year after termination of employment. So if i leave apple, then well obviously a year later the app would be available.

I love the idea of gestures, maybe within specific apps

I would love to incorporate many apps into one, example have its own gps system, so it is tied into the same app, instead of locating your existing gps, and launching that app. so if that is done, i would pretty much taylor a gps to the UI of a complete system

        example attached

It looks great and everything, but do you really think you'll be able to get MotionX GPS to allow you to use there interface for GPS? There are a lot of other options out there, one of which I'm working with to go into the Front End I'm developing. The Mapping and GPS SDK I'm using is Cloudmade. I have put in an email to MotionX about incorporating their app into mine and have yet to receive any communication about it.
