  • Windows CE Chinese Double DIN

Hi there, first post here. Done plenty of searching but still non the wiser.

I'm considering buying a double din CE powered head unit from the East. It does everything i need it to do, ie run tomtom and listen to the radio and mp3's.

Now, the main difference on the items on fleebay is seems to be the front end. SOme of them are offensivly ugly. You must be able to change them from one to the other - they are running Samasung 400mhz processors - presumeably ARM.

Does anyone know of the name of any of these front ends for CE so i can do a search on them, or any other info or experience using these units.

    Thanks, Rick.

Can you post a link, or some specs of the unit you are talking about... maybe then we can help more.

Are there any front ends for WinCE, other than those that are included with (and inseparable from) devices like these?

I suspect the answer is no, but I would love to be wrong about that.

I know this has not been updated in a while but has anyone heard about upgrading the front end? also I can't picture these having all that great sound output?

and most of them say they can control an ipod now

for that price i could buy a used brand name version.

are you sure they are all Win CE based. I have enquired couple of suppliers all said the WinCe is only for GPS. I realy confused now.
If it is WIN Ce based then we should be able to install all win ce applications. Can anyone please advice on this

Writing programs for windows CE isn't entirely dissimilar to a NT based Windows, the base level API is about the same, and there's even a compact .net framework for it. In THEORY it'd be fairly easy. In practice is another matter, but I've written small apps for my GPS which runs windows CE and they run perfectly fine, never played around with getting the compact .net framework on it. I'd say anyone with experiance with CE should give it a shot, if I had money to spare I would.

i hope wince 5.0 will allow .net framework 3.5. Perhaps there wont be much difference between XP or win ce as long as it supports .net Framework.

I understand that there will be some deviations because of the nature of OS. But i hope that can be handled with bit care

BTW any one knows how these china brand all in one DVD using the touch screen and lcd.

Any supported mother board can be used to reuse the existing panel for a pc.

I am looking for an answer but couldnt find exactly.

I bought 1 of these units n the worst thing about them is the interface is so damn ugly to the point that i dont wana use it and also the system is slow switching modes ex. from GPS to USB or Radio to TV its slow but once you in one of the modes it moves at a decent speed like switching songs is very fast. but im also wondering if it uses Win CE all around. from my conclusion of messing around with the unit I think it has 2 O/S one using the CE operating system and the other running an Chinese O/S from a microprocessor thats all i can think of how they where able to make this unit function. seems like the Chinese O/S runs the whole show cause when i use the remote while in GPS mode it doesn't do ne thing but control the volume and an ugly HUD comes up showing the volume level thats overlayed on the GPS screen. I was able 2 do some exploring in the CE area with file explorer and I dont see much on the side besides the SD card for the GPS maps. I am going 2 try 2 get the task bar running 2 do some more tests and see if there is any thing hiding like an extra partition running the other O/S. Im almost tempted to open the sucker up n poking around a bit. if any one has ne ideas ill b sure 2 perform them on the unit. its still under warranty lol.

Yes and this Chinese O/S controls the audio/video switch which selects the sources (AuxIN/Windows CE ARM powered PDA/FM-Radio/DVD Player/DVB Tuner). (therefore these units don't have TMC because the Radio and Windows CE part is don't know each other)
It would be cheaper (doesn't this word bring their chinese eyes to glare?) and much more flexible to have a Windows CE ARM as the boss controlling the FM Tuner IC, Audio and stuff.
In fact this would be the lesser expensive solution for car entertainment below x86 and Windows XP. It would make the devices useful for us and others -> so much useful that we would buy them !

I guess there are 2-3 electronic designs in around 10-20 different brands and all of them are chinese mixed chaos design

Hmm, I recently purchased one of these and have scouring the internets the past few days for info on accessing the Win CE 5 side of the unit. If it were possible to access the Win CE, I question whether the unit would be in contact with the DVD drive, the USB drive, the two SD card slots, BT, etc. If it were, we might have something here. If not, I still have a decent DVD/GPS 2-din stereo. It could use a seperate equalizer in my opinion to sound better.

Possible with "soldering" - if you look inside at the PCB you will see why the " ...
The DVD player CPU (documentation NA, Firmware locked) controls USB and DVD drive. The SD card slot may belong to the Windows CE ARM (How does the Unit access GPS map data ?) ?

It's a waste of time... better invested in searching the chinese guys and kicking their butts.

I opened up my unit and start messing with things. I see that the CE side of the unit is directly connect to one of the SD cards and it has its own stand alone board just for running windows and theres outputs and inputs to pump the sound, video, and touch screen data through the radios firmware. there is another OS firmware built in the DVD Rom drive. The DVD Rom drive controls the USB, SD (not GPS SD), Bluetooth, and FM/AM Radio. The Radios OS controls the TV, AUX and built in AMP and EQ. I also was able to unlock the CE side everything is in Chinese but I manage to be able to work around in the environment and found and SysUpdater tool in the windows folder. My options to update is OS, Logo, Logo2, Boot, App and options are Reset, Format, Update, Exit. So that said looks like everything interfaces with the radio OS and acts like a switch with CE and DVD Rom drive interfaces as FMode said. looks like in another forum they figured out to get active sync working with USB on the CE side take a look if you know how to read spanish. http://www.radio-multimedia.com/foro...hp?topic=345.0

Ever since I laid Eyes on these devices, i started thinking that they should operate in much the same way as the windows mobile phones, but to my dismay, they dont. realistically there must be a way to get into the bootloader for the CE system (much like windows mobile phones have a bootloader) if it were possible to launch some kind of executable that could get you into the CE shell, I'd say much can be done from there. - Just don't look at me to do it!
