  • IR Transmitter/Reciever Solutions?

I'm trying to find a solution that allows my PC to communicate with other devices via IR.

I'm thinking of a USB or serial IR-transmitter-and-receiver-in-one that has the source code available. My preference would be that it can be controlled via VB.NET (ActiveX?). I'm just learning about drivers and such, so I don't know too much about how they can be used with different languages.

Any sort of insight is greatly appreciated, even if it is a link to another forum site.

Why do you want infrared when you could use radio frequency (RF)? Infrared communication requires line of site.

I should have specified that I want to communicate with IR devices. This is more of a "home-puter"/home-automation than a car one. I'd like something that I can use to manipulate devices in my house instead of remotes (stereos, TV's, cable boxes, AC[mine does have a remote], etc)

Ah so you want to communicate with OEM electronics, that's more difficult. Check out the line of Harmony remotes, they're completely computer configurable and you can program y our own labels (receiver/DVD/AC...) into the remote to show on the display. They'll work with anything that already has an infrared remote, you just point the remote at the bottom of the Harmony remote and it learns. If you got deep pockets, check out the Harmony 1000 which is a wireless touchscreen and is pretty much the elite (that I've found) for controlling home electronics.

On the flip side you could always use something like a Fusion Brain or X10 to control all these things via the computer and then just get a radio frequency transmitting remote control to run the computer.
