  • Real time weather radar slaved to gps?

I've searched several times with little luck. Has anyone developed a good solution for this yet?

I'd like to be roadtripping and have weather radar overlayed onto my nav screen.

    So, this doesn't exist?

      Short answer is no. Quicklist:
      1. Most commerical nav products don't support user image overlays. You'd need a custom nav program or something based on Google Maps or Google Earth.
      2. The real-time radar data isn't available in a format that can be easily scaled and overlaid onto a map display. At least not the stuff from NOAA.
      3. Access to radar data while out on the interstate might be pretty iffy.

Now if all you want to do is query a provider for the closest radar map based on your actual lat/long, that's pretty easy. Some of the existing weather plugins might already do that for you.

The WeatherBug app for my BlackBerry does overlays like this.

Granted, my BB has internet connection on the move, and it's a small screen.
The only GPS app that I know of that has the capacity for overlays is Google Earth, and it isn't really a navigation app....
Well, there is a Google nav app for mobile phones, specifically Android-based phones, but I don't know if that supports overlays, let alone overlays that rely on real-time data such as weather info.

I have to admit, it would be really cool to see in a nav app.

Think of the uses for a nav app overlay:
        - Weather info (precipitation, temps, etc.)
        - Gas prices (See where the gas station is and how much gas costs there!)
        - Wifi hotspots (as a wireless entwork is detected, it will display the location on the map!)
        - Traffic information (Make it look like the cutesie traffic maps they use on the local news)

There are probably dozens of other uses, but this is what I can come up with this early, having had only one cup o' joe...
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
        How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

          1. agreed
          2. agreed - scaleable is available, but overlay is difficult to achieve
          3. Not so much. I have 30 weather maps preprogrammed in my RR skin (9 animated and updated every 2 minutes). All work fine while traveling. One found by JohnWPB for DFX4, centers on your GPS coords. I could easily program a plugin to pull up the closest local radar animation, but for my needs, I'm accustomed to a larger view of weather conditions across several states.

I don't guess it has to be overlayed but it would be nice. There seems to be a fair amount of interest, yet no solution. Must mean it's a pretty difficult feat. Too bad I have no skills or I would whip something up haha.

Seems like #3 would depend on your internet access method and data plan. My Clear 4G is great in those areas where coverage is available, not so much out on the road. GizmoQ's right though, long story short, it's doable as a standalone app, but probably not as an integrated feature on a nav system.

Full screen weather uses google maps as the base layer. If I could get that to display centered on my location - that would the way I would want to go.

That's pretty interesting, never seen it before. I actually prefer the one JohnWPB found because any number of parameters can be adjusted to perfectly embed it into Ride Runner, animated, automatically updates, as well as being able to use RR variables to center the map on your exact location:
