  • Windows 7, Garmin Mobile PC, and ultra-low volume

I'm having an issue with audio volume on GMPC running on Windows 7. Basically...you can't hear anything the Garmin voice says...it's next to inaudible.

If I were to put things into a perspective here... I can have the Windows volume set to Max. Winamp volume set to half, and the Car's volume set to 10 (I use the headunit) I can hear music perfectly fine, even over roadnoise. In order to hear the Garmin voice with those settings...I have to turn the car to at LEAST 22.

I haven't had a chance to dig around in the registry for Garmin, but has anyone else run into this?

    Thanks,

no one? really? dang. I decided to hell with win7 on the carpc anyway. Going back to xp and either ewf or fbwf.

I seem to have a lot less problems when I used xp.

must be a CF only setting. Inside Garmin MobilePC the only thing you can do is select the voice, unlike the standalone units where you can also adjust the volume. I tried nearly everything I could from re-installing Garmin, to removing and updating drivers. Nothing fixed it. In the end, I went back to XP and the problem is solved. I wanted to use Win7...but I was having other issues with the Garmin overlay not working right and problems with application focus not functioning right. XP didn't have any of those issues so I just went back to it.

I also have the same problem in Win7 & GMPC. I think it was the same in XP, but that was too long ago to remember..

Mine was bad enough that it was worthless and I didn't have the problem in XP. Might just be another 'bug' in GMPC that Garmin doesn't want to acknowledge. Just like the one in 5.00.70 where it just disappears from the screen and to get it back you have to kill the process and re-start it.

assuming you are using the TTS voices in garmin... All TTS voices are "low" in volume on windows for some reason. This is not a Garmin thing. As far as stability and volume control, there are other front-ends out there that dont have these problems....

Apparently someone was working on a solution, I think it was the guys who are embedding it into CF. Can't find the post though

It was with both TTS and non-TTS voices, and it was only with the Garmin App. iGuidance and iGo8 both were fine with TTS. If they are 'low' that is one thing...but to have to pause the music and turn the car's volume up to 25 when the max is somewhere in the 30's is quite extreme. Also, I don't have the problem in XP.

Maybe the problem isn't just Garmin, but a combination of things. Maybe it's their default TTS volume, combined with something in Windows 7 (ie, sound drivers) that is the culprit. Either way, XP works so I went back to it. Someday when I have loads of time on my hands I may try it again.

Could be win 7 decided the relative volume was too high and cut it back.

So where did you have the volume set for GMPC in the volume mixer? My guess would be very low. It's a nice feature of Windows 7 that allows you to set volume for each program relative to the Windows volume for situations just like this.

I have the same problem and all the individual mixers (including GMPC) are maxed out.

I don't know how else to say this, but TTS speech volume is low for Garmin on windows 7. Non TTS is louder, but its not going to bleed your ear drums.
Depending on your hardware set-up and the front-end you are using, you can set your amplifier at a louder setting and turn down the volume on your music and videos using your front end. I can only speak for OpenMobile, but this will give you an idea as far as how OM will handle GMPC speech.

This will allow us to attenuate or mute any other audio, to allow GMPC to be heard clearly. No need for the user to have to turn down the volume. The front-end should be smart enough to handle that.

The plugin is NOT released yet, but in it's full form, it is NOT embedded (no resizing issues), but instead natively integrated into OM, giving complete access to the majority of the map, data, and events generated by GMPC. And as another spoiler... there is no need for OSK button in OM. We can detect when you select a text field within GMPC, and bring up an OSK, that is, if you prefer not to use our gesture control:

already checked that as part of the troubleshooting, and all were maxed.
