  • Windows XP Pro or Windows 7 Starter?

anybody is using Win 7 Starter? there are any benefits or disadvantages over Win xp pro?
I have a single Intel Atom board with maximum 2GB and I would like to get the best/fastest os possible. I want my pc to be as snappy as possible with this setup.
another question is about which Centrafuse to use, 2 or 3.1 for the same reason(fast and features)?

go with xp pro. i believe sp2 will be the fastest-- sp3 adds a lot of bloat, but sometimes necessary.

win7 starter is pretty stripped down compared to the normal os, so i naturally don't like it..

I've tried XP Pro, Win7 basic, home basic, starter, professional and ultimate (had a LOT of free time for a week). XP booted the fastest out of all of them after some tweaks. Win7 boots fairly fast without any tweaks. Surprisingly, win7 pro and ultimate booted faster than basic/starter on my setup. Running after the OS was loaded was also very smooth. Win7 ultimate wasn't that great IMO. Way more bloat than what is needed in the car. Same with professional. Basic, home basic, and starter all booted quicker than the other versions of win7, but I ran into limitations with them (wikipedia has a good comparison chart of the limitations ) and ended back up with win7 professional.

edit: removed content that made no sense

I say try them both on your setup and see what works best for you.

All of my Atom boards run much faster on 7 than on XP Pro. Starter would work just fine for a carpc, but you have to understand the limitations. If you plan on using multiple monitors, then stay away from Starter.

Here's the MS comparison chart, which should help you decide:

I use CF 3.5 and like it. For me, it's better than 2.x or 3.1. 3.6 is a bug fix release that should be out sometime (I'd say soon, but I know better than to hope!) that is supposed to fix some annoying issues introduced with 3.5.

I just did a reinstall and decided to go with Windows 7 pro, But i also followed most of Blackvipers guide for removing services since I am on a Atom 330 board, http://www.blackviper.com/category/guides/windows-7/, there is also a great xp one.

The main differences I can notice for windows 7 are easier to setup and slightly better ion compatibility, plus boot and resume screen customization, here is a video of the one I did during testing

Xp is a little quicker setup, but overall Windows 7 is much smoother running now that I changed to it.

HOWEVER if you do not have at least a 1GB of ram then stick with XP

In reference to your CF question I use 3.5, while it has more overhead than 2.0 and it does have a little issue with some transitions, but overall i much prefer 3.5 because of the simplicity of adding apps versus 2.0

I agree. My Atom based bench system runs faster and boots quicker on 7. I have 2 hard drives installed, one has XP and the other has 7 Home Basic.

nice list. I don't think I will need any of those missing features. I may try it out and see how it goes.
I have tried ultimate and it seems pretty slow with Cf3.1.
