  • Car Media app (brand new!) available for beta test! DVD Support!

    Hi Guys (and girls!),

I've been avidly following this forum the better part of 3 months (so yes, I guess I'm a newby!) , but have been actively developing my own software specifically for my car setup. I'm looking for beta testers to start playing with my software sometime this week (though if you ask to test next week, I'm sure that there will be no probs!).

I've thrown together a quick website were you can see some screenshots of the application (with my crappy skin on it!) and get a more complete list of the features. The site is

    http://www.ixiomsoftware.com/apx/

Here's an overview of some of the basic features that work right now! :

    MP3/WMA/WAV Player
    CD Player
DVD Player (requires codec - free download!)
External Application Support (launch an application)
    Fully Skinnable
    Playlist support /w database
    Multi-tasking support - ie Play DVDs & MP3s simultaneously!

Check the site for more information, and post back to this thread if your interested in testing, or have any comments!

    thanks,

    GTC

    just a suggestion.

On your screenshots page it has a blatent
"**** you" on the playlist, I personally wouldn't care, but it just doesn't go nicely with a website iykwim.

Kinda funny though, first is says

    "praise you"

    then

    "**** you"

      Looks promising

Are you going open source with it? I'm writing my own (I want to use a snazzy 3D interface)...

Is the movie Mission Impossible? It's from a few years ago, as there's a building there now
      Cheers,
      Nick.

I need to get out more . A friend has a flat just down the road from there though. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

Are you going the open source route? Or could you be persuaded to go that route?

chiark - I'm not sure about open souce ... The application is actually composed of 3 parts, the UI, the media engines, and the stuff that glues the 2 together. I went this route so that I could swap the engines out - ie if like Windows Media Player better then Winamp - just drop it in place (with some small configuration - no new code!).

The preamble is just to say that the actual UI portion of the system is based on a framework I created 3 years ago which has generated some significant revenues for me :-) While I still wholly own the UI framework and could go the open source route, I'm still generating a bit of income and would feel more comfortable keeping it closed for now :-( ... All the UI code is written in straight C++ and is also portable across most versions of Windows CE and Windows (no 95 support). The other parts use a bit of MFC just for speed of slapping things together.

I suppose the only good part is that the UI has been used by more then 50000 people (in kiosks and handheld devices) so has had a fairly good workout to this point and is quite stable (has been used for continuous input for 15+ hour stretches in the past).

However, the other parts will probably end up open source; in any event, I am happy to explain (with psuedo-source (or full depending on how lazy I'm feeling!) examples) individual concepts inside the application. So if you have questions, fire away - perhaps in another thread? - I'd like to keep this one more for non-techies !

            cheers,

            GTC

Makes perfect sense mate, cheers for that.

I too am using a component approach for everything for exactly the reasons you are. However, my UI hasn't been quite so extensively tested - it ain't even written yet.

              Good luck

If you want a beta tester, I'm more than happy to play.

              Cheers,
              Nick.

Chiark - consider yourself on the list as the first tester!

I'm putting together some instructions and an install file for all testers and will PM/e-mail all involved in the next few days with a quick how-to for setting up the app!

                cheers,

                Brendon

Hey man. Looks great. Our community can always use more options for our carputers

If you are still looking for beta testes. I would be more than welcome to give you a hand. I am running an EIPA 800 on a 7'' widescreen LCD and windowsxp.

Great to hear unrealer! I think that I have 4 or 5 people now who have volunteered - great response for the first ... I'll take a few more if others are interested. I'm hoping the beta window won't be too long, and that the first "official" version will be ready in the next few weeks.

As I had mentioned in a few PMs, I'll send everyone involved a PM /e-mail in the next couple of days with details on how I'd like to see things proceed ... (suggestions are naturally welcomed as well! )

                    cheers,

                    GTC

Hi vcbb5 - you are on the list as a beta tester! No need to have a car comp!

To be honest, I don't know if the idea for the maximus codec came from you or not (I spent quite a few hours last week tracking down information ... )

I do know that if you type "free dvd codec" in google, you hit maximusdvd.com first .... The main source that I remember is an article that starts out with "So you bought a lone DVD Player and now you want to play DVDs - you are here searching for the free codec - unfortunately there is no such thing as a free codec" ... I found this pretty odd, since the website later lists the MaximusDVD codec under DVD utilities ...

vcbb5 - I do remember reading that thread - you may very well have gotten me started!

Regardless of the case, thanks for the suggestion on the board in general - often the non-techies (and my apologies if you consider yourself a techy! ) provide the best product direction and suggestions!
