  • Any interest in character LCD program ?

Obviously I'm busy programming the FrodoPlayer, but I just wanted to test the waters and see if there is any interest in a character lcd based program. I have a serial 4x20 Matrix orbital here and I thought about doing a small player.

So is there any interest ?

And if so, what features would you like in a program like this.

Also other LCDs could be added, but since I'm broke, and suck at soldering, someone would have to loan it to me, pre-wired.

But if you have a 4x20 MO, we should be all set !

I would like to see it in there. I don't really get into having TONS of options on a character LCD. But mainly like the idea of first line scrolling "Artist - Song" and second line reading out "quality - playback time/total time". I am hoping to do a reverse lcd reflected in the windshield and so only the basic features would be really wanted.

However wouldn't it be easier to simply right support for one of the major lcd drivers like LCDC? So that the end user can just choose from available info sent from FrodoPlayer and layout as they choose? I know LCDC costs but I thought there were some other free ones?

In all actuallity, I want the programming experience of directly controlling it, but that is an option I will look into.

      Any more suggestions peeps ?

Might come in handy with speed and other information from the gps on the character display, when running a fullscreen vis.
Dunno how to calc these things, but i must be possible to do.

I don't think you are understanding, this is for a character lcd ONLY program...

I think CVI is saying it would be cool to display the gps stats while the Graphical display was in use.

Full screen vis running on graphics display, and Speed and heading info on the chacter display.

            Anyway - I have a 2x20 Matrix orbital serial VFD. I also have a parallel 2x40 LCD.

frodobaggins - It's not pretty, wiring harness just kinda hanging off, but if you want it - say the word. If anyone else wants to offer up the LCD moduels, I'm hapy to solder them.

would be nice to see a player that supports the cheaper serial backpacks.
wirz and seetron. one can buy matrix orb and crystal but they aren't cheap. surplus character lcds abound and a wirtz or seetron backpack lets you use the easily extendable serial port.

I understood, that may be an option on future FrodoPlayer releases(hell release 1 is still delayed..)

but mainly in this thread I want ideas for a character LCD ONLY application. No full screen lcds...

Yes I would love to test them out and program for them, PM me and we can work out the shipping and the time for me to return them to you.

but anyway, by the time you buy a backpack and and a surplus lcd, and them hooked it all up, you've spent about the same money with twice the work

I've definitley got some interest, as you know, I'm trying to learn by doing and come up with my own solution. If I do something though, it'll be very rudimentary.

If you're gonna "go for the gold" try to do everything Markus Zhender's winamp plugin does, but under DOS.

                        Character LCD Program Features

Some of the handiest features that I have in my custom VB App, which you might want to include are:
                        - ability to browse through your hard drive (*.mp3 of course) with the keypad
                        - when a song is highlighted you can either play it right away or enqueue it
                        - auto shutdown - automatically shutdown after the current song is finished.
                        - control the EQ (if using winamp)
                        - last song recall - like last channel recall on a TV remote

The browsing is the single most handy feature in my experience. I wasn't able to find a program that would do it reliably so I had to write my own.

Other features which I will be implementing later, would be
to be able to play songs which haven't been listened to in a while, and songs which I have just downloaded (based on the filedate) - similar to those Portable MP3 players.

                            bombboyer,
My program is pretty much unconfigurable and unusable without code modifications as it is highly customized and poorly written.
I am in the process of cleaning it up. It sounds like Frodo is developing an application that would be suitable for general use.

                            Frodo,
One thing which may be obvious but is important, is to separate the player control from the LCD output. Even though your initial program may only support MO displays, using general calls like LCD_Clear(), LCD_WriteString(string), etc. with the implemenations in another module, would allow you to easily port it to 44780 parallel, or Noritake parallel/serial displays by only changing those functions. I am in the process of changing my app to support a newly purchased Noritake VFD (was previously using a 44780 parallel), and doing it that way has made it easier.
