  • Windows Welcome Splash?

Does anyone know how to get the Windows XP welcome screen to go away? I don't mean the welcome logon screen, or the startup logo, but the blue welcome screen that just says Welcome on it.

I have change my registry to point at my app, instead of explorer, and removed the startup logo, but I want to get rid of the blue welcome scrren that stays there for ages after my media player has started. (be it winamp or whatever).

    Any ideas?

By the way, here is how to make an app start as shell etc for WinXP

    Run RegEdit and navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\WinLogon

In the list of values you should see: Shell "explorer.exe" set the shell variable to "c:\winamp.exe". If "shell" is not there, create a new string value as "shell". Repeat the same procedure for at this point in the registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Winlogon

Close RegEdit and reboot your PC.

to get rid of the startup screen

You can disable the Windows XP splash screen, but you should be aware that removing the splash screen will also cause you not to see any boot-up messages, such as chkdsk, but it should boot a little quicker also.
    - Enter msconfig (Start, Run, msconfig)
    - Select the "BOOT.INI" tab
    - Click On the line that looks like multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(0)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
Which should be highlighted by default, and check the "NOGUIBOOT" box.
If you need to go back, or have trouble, you can simply remove the new switch from your boot.ini file.

    Cheers

Go to control panel, users and you can click on the way people log on. From there, you can just click auto logon etc and that screen should disappear.

There are a number of things you have to do:

Get TweakUI for Windows XP from Microsoft.

In TweakUI, you can edit the Logon desktop (the screen that shows BEFORE the welcome screen) .. You can assign your own wallpaper, cursors, etc. to this screen. If you assign a blank cursor, you won't see a mouse cursor while windows starts up!

Even if you set auto login you'll still get a blue welcome screen. If for some reason you have multiple users on the pc or if you want to have a password but have to type it when your computer starts up, you'll have to use tweakui to set an auto login as the users control panel wont allow you to auto-login a user with a password.

Finally, you'll need to disable fast user switching and the welcome screen from the Users control panel. It's under the "Change the way users log on/off" button.

This will all get rid of any blue welcome screen but it will still show a dialog box (like win2k does) when it's doing the log-in. So far, I don't yet know of a way to eliminate this short of XP Embedded.
