  • cool winamp skin

Found this cool winamp skin, works pretty good in the car too.
    http://www.winamp.com/skins/details.php?id=122902

you have to scale all the windows to about 200% or so to fit your LCD screen. Ive been using it for about 2 days trouble free. Its about 90% effective for incar use. Only issues i have is how to scale the scroll bars in winamp (anyone know how to do this?).

I haven't found out how to increase the size of the scroll bar but i did find this out:

To change the font size in the playlist editor so its something touchable, go into winamp.ini and locate
    pe_fontsize=11
change that to about 20 or whatever, it works like a charm!

i actaully don't like that. i have two favs. HAL eye and Lounge. Those offer the biggest and simplest controls. instead of just every button thrown onto a 4x7 rectangle.

I found that MMD3 skin cool, but it's too slow and cluttered for CarPC use. Does anyone know of a skin without buttons, just music info/vis? And preferably with high contrast, since I will be using a composite LCD with no touchscreen (I'll use IR remote control)...

Maybe I'll just design one matching my VW mk4 color scheme (actually there is one VW mk4 skin which is great, but it's a version 2 (classic) skin)...

Winamp 5.03 takes 8 seconds to launch with MMD3 skin in the 1GHz Celeron notebook I am testing skins at (I'll be using a C3 800MHz EPIA on my carputer), while Winamp launches in 1 second with the classic skin and 4 seconds with the modern skin. I think that makes the skin comparatively slow, whatever machine I use.

I have just tried Hal Eye and Lounge, but I am a traditional man myself

hum, i guess it is slow then. 8 sec isnt all that bad, you should hear music playing before the interface is loaded though. After all the skins ive been through, im finding that the default modern skin is good enough, and in a lot of respects better than any of the others as far as in the car is concerned.

On my Pentium 133 any classic skin would launch 30+ seconds
I can't beleive some people see any difference between 4 and 8 seconds

I've been using MMD3 on my desktop since it first came out and haven't ever really used any others for more than a day or two.

It's the best skin I've ever used, bar none...
But it's just not suited for carpc touchscreen use. It's too slow (comparatively), and too cluttered.

For me, it's Arby all the way. We need it at 800x600 and updated for winamp 5, though...how that's going by the way? I was going to attempt the conversion myself, until I saw that it was already underway, but haven't seen anything in a while...

I used the pioneer HU skin for a while. Buttons are kinda small though.

The status of the arby winamp5 updated version is as follows:

Its still being worked on but ive been out of the loop for a few weeks now.
My home machine took a big crap on me and its been super slow to fix because im so busy at work etc. But i think the machine may be toast, im trying to hold off on buying a new pc (read im cheap) but i may be forced to if i cant get my main box back up and running. I had a power surge hit my computer (yes i have a power strip too) and damaged a few parts like my videocard, network card, i think the HD is dieing, sound card. So ive been replaceing them one by one trying to sort everything out. So for the past few weeks the only computers ive been using are my work computer and my carputer. So thats the status from me, i havent talked to arby in a few weeks since the last update on the graphics portion of the skin, but he seemed to be very busy at the time also. Its still comeing, just very slowly.

                              Ive been trying out skins,
So far i think MMD3 is pretty straingt forward, pretty easy to use
I like the layout of hal, however i dont think its that good for the car because you have to know which edges to touch, This could be quite cumbersome for a passenger new to the system. (granted there are reg. buttons but they are much smaller)

abrys skin is looking promising, i'd like to try out the new version
                              amd 1700, biostar m7ncg 400, hitachi deskstar 120 8mb , 512 pc2700, liliput 7"
now to put it all together
