  • Which OS?

    Hi all,

I'm looking at getting the MII 1.2 GHz Mobo. The question is which OS do you think I should run?

    1) 2000
    2) ME
    3) XP
    4) XP Pro

So which one and why? And before any Linux fans come along and tell me number 5), I'm don't plan on using Linux.

Use to have installed MII 10000/512Mb/40GB, Lilliput 7", OPUS 90W, Wifi-G PCMCIA, Head Unit Aux adapter, Delorme GPS, XM PCR, Audigy NX, RR

Well, you listed only one OS - just different versions. Use Windows!

      My opinion is ME.

Windows 98. Sorry but Me is crap. True you have bugs with both but Me has it worse.

If you have enough RAM I would try XP Pro as well. Depends on what you plan on doing.

Try cut down XP pro, can't go back to 98/ME ever again. ME = More Errors

Right, just lot of current software does not simply work on Win98 (SE) so lot of hacking and updates would be needed in order to get things like BlueTooth stack, Mozilla or even MediaEngine working. Other then that, I agree.

XP is wise choice too, depending on size you have to achieve. You can strip WinME down to 120 MB or even more, You will probably not succeed in getting WinXP below 400 MB.

            W2K - no way.

XP Pro is definitely the way to go.
              It's more stable,
              support more products,
has better security if you go wifi
ok Linux fans, I know you can shoot holes through two out of three of those, but I'm only comparing across Windows versions

Truely, Linux could be the ultimate way to go, but I have yet to find anything as easy to work with as Windows XP. Plenty of registry hacks and settings to help configure for this usage. But eventually someone will compile a really good, fast, Linux kernel and develope a good shell to for what we need. The part that's holding it all back is that we're not all using the same hardware, and have different needs and tastes for this PC. That kinda helps lean things back in Windows favor.

XP PRO definately (but you will need enough RAM). Its by far more stable than any other Windows so far, tons of adjustments that you can do. Windows ME is only good if you want to exit and enter your car once in a while

As good as linux is, there is no normal GPS software for it.

One question out of curiousity why MII 1.2? For the same price you can have Athlon XP-M >2000+ with RAM included.

I agree with Antimatter. However, if anyone can put forward a motherboard with XP-M that is of the same size (or similar) to the MII and with the same low heat etc. etc. then I'll certainly consider it.
