  • What database should I use for my project

I want to be able to use SQL querys on my database and with my access 2000 DB for some reason it wouldn't let me...anybody know a good database program thats easy to connect to with VB that allows SQL querys? Thanks!
CarPC install is starting to come along again...

umm, actually access would be the BEST thing to use with VB...only SQL Server would be faster. but I doubt you got a few grand around for the license of it:-P

what are you trying to do with your access 2k DB that it will not let you do SQL queries?

          DO NOT USE MSDE.

It is not good for this type of application. You would need to have
a DB service running, etc, etc. Also MSDE will ****up your MDAC if
          you aren't careful.

If you need help using Access with VB I can help. Just tell me what
          you've got so far.

Never had MDAC issues using MSDE or SQL 2000. Yes, you need the 'service' running and true, it might be overkill for this type of application. Just don't use Jet

              Nothing wrong with Jet.

Frodo, I will have to give you a shout when I get off work...

I get an error when trying to use SQL querys on my Access 2k DB like

                SELECT * FROM mp3s WHERE Artist='whoever'

I can use just the table name I want to open and it works just fine though...

I really would like to use Access, so maybe you can give me a source example of connecting and doing a query...theres many different ways to do it and I'm trying to use DAO 3.6 to do it, so maybe you can give me a tip...I'll PM you or something later today!

                Thanks guys!

i don't know if DAO 3.6 can do this, but I know Jet can. you can create the queries (esp selects) within the access database, then access them like a function with parameters. this will speed up the select pull roughly 25% to 50%. it does increase the size of the access database a small bit, but it keeps the data already generated. this is called a stored procedure in an actual relational database (MySQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle, etc.); Access calles it a "query"

use to do it with ASP 4.0 (subset of VB) for small web server applications running IIS on a Windows server:-)

Ah finally somebody called 'it' by 'its' name. Access is a front end. JET is the database.

It's hard to imagine that you'd need anything more than JET for a CarPC application. MSDE would work fine too but probably just makes deployment and maintenance a bit more involved. Truthfully, I'm suprised some of the front ends don't just use ADO with XML files as the underlying data store. We're not talking about huge amounts of data are we?

Cool, and you can dump DAO right now, because my examples will not be
                      using it. Learn ADO.
