  • Graphic Artist / Skinner Needed!

I've been developing a carputer interface application and I am in desperate need of a skinner. The graphic artist I was working with just quit because of time issues. This is not vaporware. The application is nearing the end of the development cycle after about three years of designing and implementing it and it should be functionally complete sometime in August and and ready for release by December.

Skinning the application will be no small project. At least 200 individual files will be needed for all the controls used by the program. The skin, however, is just image files, it does not allow configuring the layout of the different images, they are all hard coded in at specific locations in the program itself. This compromise had to made to achieve the level of usability and complexity that the program delivers, but should make skinning an easier process. The program is based in Direct3D and takes advantage of the transparency and animiation abilities of 3D cards as well as real-time resizing of the skin to the proper resolution so only a single skin will have to be developed.

This will be a commercial software application. It is backed by an LLC started for the project and already has a partnership with an established car audio company to deliver a hardware bundle for the software. The skinner will recieve a percentage of the profits made by the application for developing it.

I'm not going to post more about the program online until it is ready to ship, but it does have many capabilities above and beyond whats available now.

I will expect at least 10 hours a week of work for this project from the skinner and only want canidates who are familar with carputers. Do not bother applying if you are not ready to devote a significant portion of your free time to help make this project a reality.

If you are possibly interested in developing the skin for this program, please submit a preview of any relevant work you have done in the past to [email protected] This can be skins for other carputer applications or for other things like video games or any project involving digital images. I will go into a lot more detail about the program's capabilities and show a short demo to successful applicants as well as describe the complete expectations and benefits of the position.

    Wow...what a teaser!
Sounds great. Any program info you'd like to share?
I can't help you with skinning but I'd be very interested to know more about this since I try to find software to couple my carpc hardware bundle (I'll start selling them in eastern Europe by September).I currently use myHTPC as base for the initial release but I'm trying to find something better.

Anyway I wish you best of luck

    Cheers.

Dude, I called that number and the dude who answered didn't know any junior... Whats up with that, I want to get paid already!

For those of you reading this who have no clue what were talking about go to the site in my sig... Also note that site is from a couple years ago the car and the software on there has little to do with the software being talked about in this thread.

I'm really not going to publicly answer many questions about the software until its completely done as I don't see any point in getting everyone excited about something that won't be publically avaiable until December or developing a reputation as unstable by demoing unfinished software.

Yes I am also quite impressed by Febsperanze's work...

I actually contacted him prior to starting this thread, but disappointingly he doesn't have the adequate time resources to help me.

That's a shame - throw more money his way, its suprising how time can become available when the hourly rate goes up...

Here's what I have learned here, the skinning is everything, if you have a decent app, not having major holes etc, then the skinning quality becomes a dominat factor in its success. Feb's worth a couple hundred an hour if you want this to fly...

                            No, it's not about money.

I'm very flattered that he has asked me to skin his program and I am really impressed with the demo. However, I'm also overwhelmed with work sometimes, and the program seems to be needing a lot of time. It's one thing to skin without pay; there's no responsibility involved. But if I have promised someone that I deliver, I WILL deliver. In this case, I don't want to disappoint god of cpu because of the time constraints.

God of cpu, I wish you all the best. Maybe you can contact more mods. He's very good in skinning as well.

Alas, this is a privatly funded venture and I've decided against seeking outside venture capitalists at this point so all compensation will have to be in the form of the product's potential, which potentially is worth millions .

This project isn't really about the money. It was started because of the great potential in having a completly customizable and programmable computer in a car and just the lack of complete and stable software that can actually be used safely while driving. The commercial aspect of the software is just what enables me to keep working on this for 40+ hrs a week. I expect all the people I'm working with to have the same motivations too... Do it because you love carputers and believe in the potential of the product to revolutionize what people think about putting a PC in a car, do it at a professional level because people are paying you to do so.
