  • Anyone looked into ReadyOn for XP boot?

I was stumbling around looking for hardware, and I stumbled on this little software package: ReadyOn -- suppoed to be an "Instant On" solution for XP embedded, but reading further into it, it turns out XP Professional is supported as well! I hadn't contacted them about it yet -- don't really have time right now anyway -- just wondered if anyone had checked into it...

Its perfect, but it costs $6700 for 1000 run times. A 1000 person group buy is the only reasonable way I see, haha.
    nice find tho

ouch! Well at that price it's $6.70 per seat, so it's stupid that they won't sell it in single units for $20 or something if it really works.. Did you contact them or find this number on the site?

update -- sent them an email; we'll see what happens.

The number was on the site...but I'll email them today. It seems stupid that they won't sell individually, but I guess they want to keep it in the kiosk market.

I just sent them an email also... If they want to stick w/ kiosks and the like, surely they have to realize that a lot of those are one-off projects.

I got a response back. They license ReadyOn for $25/unit and it is available for XP pro. I may pick up a copy to see how it works out. Gonna call him and see what exactly it's about.

$25 may be a small price to pay for an instant boot/hibernate type feature that actually works, so I'll keep everyone posted.

Yes.. I will keep all of my progress noted in this thread. For reference, my test will be between XP Pro installations on a VIA M100000 -- with and without ReadyOn.

OK I got the skinny on this.. They are sending me the SDK so that I can try it out. I will post feedback here.

Apparently it works somewhat similarly to XP's built in hibernate feature except that it can be configured to resume into the exact same state every time you power on.. IE every time you boot up, you boot into a fixed system state.. the system reverts itself to this state on every startup so that stuff like loss of power, etc are not a problem for it.

Support is available for XP Pro and XPe (embedded)

I will be getting this probably next week and will start seeing how it works immediately!

If it works just like hibernate, execept that it doesn't save your last state, but resumes to the static set state, what benefit does it have over hibernate for carputers? The position in your playlist will get reset and you'll still have to deal with device reinitialzation problems you have with hibernate.

It remains to be seen whether or not it's using XP's own hibernate functions to do its dirty work or not. Regular windows hibernate is problematic because you put the burden of coming back with uninitiized hardware on the drivers and the applications to gracefully recover. Resuming to a predefined configuration every time makes it a lot easier to work around problems. I would imagine also that it's possible to set certain things not to roll back certain so that things can be preserved between boots. They said their target market is set-top boxes and the like. He mentioned that they are working with some companies doing vehicle computers also.

ReadyOn might solve all of these problems, or it might not. That is the point of testing it anyway... we'll have to see next week!
