  • USB 2.0 on Win2k3...need service pack?

So my USB port is recognized as a 1.1 port and I downloaded the USB 2.0 drivers from VIA's site and tried the ones off of the CD. Everytime I remove the USB devices and it re-recognizes them it wants to go back to the 1.1 driver. So I right click and go to update driver, and specifically choose the 2.0 driver. It still "acts" like its a 1.1 usb port because it gives the message "high speed device plugged into a non-high speed hub".

Does windows 2003 server need a service pack for USB 2.0 to work properly? Keep in mind this is the evaluation ISO I downloaded off of MS's site and "fixed"

It's just my preference, I use it way more and as a desktop enviroment. I just like it way better... I'm probably gonna install XP SP1 though as I think it should have better USB 2.0 support, I'm not sure. And I'll have to go through all the BS tweaks to get it to work like I want blah...It just has issues that 2k3 has. I can't remember what it was doing last time I had XP on my carputer but I know there was some things that made me mad enough to switch. I think it had to do with file sharing and stuff...

Check VIA's site to see if they have a USB driver patch? I had to do that with an add-on PCI card for my main machine under XP Pro. Maybe that's the case with 2k3???

Well, seeing as how the EPIA series board wasn't really meant as a server, and Win2k3 SERVER wasn't really meant to be a desktop OS, it probably means that you aren't likely to be getting a patch for your board anytime soon.

i'm stupid. i got a usb 1.1 "active usb repeater cable" because i thought it would be nice to boost the signal in case i might get any interferance from my cars electrical system. it never said whether it was 1.1 or 2.0 so i assumed it wouldn't matter. well its recognized as a transparent usb hub and that would be the cause of all of this i'm sure. I haven't gotten to test it out but i'll let you guys know. i'm going to chop off the female end with the boosting circuitry and hardwire it directly into my 2.0 hub and have a relay to cut my 5v line when my comps off so it won't drain my battery...

I still think 2k3 is better When converted to be used as a desktop OS that is. It has a smaller memory footprint than XP when I tweak it out...

                          Amen to smaller memory footprints!
Win2k3 IS a pretty sweet desktop, when it's modded to do the job, but I've always had reservations about making something that was intended for one job do something else. For example, if you install Linux, and find yourself relying on WINE just to run the stuff you need to run, then Windows should never have left the desktop, IMO. Hehehehe...
                          Good luck!

I was messing around with W2k as a desktop for a while - changed my mind though even after modding it as I'm yet to be convinced it's any faster than XP once all the same software is on it, it felt faster to start with but doesn't any nice clean fresh install once it's been sorted out?
