  • How to write software to interface with hardware?

OK...this question may be way out there, I'm just looking for a general answer...I have a Engine Management System that uses a serial output to connect to my laptop. Using the supplied software (DOS based) it communicates with the EMS and I can do things like change settings, read outputs, etc...

    My questions is:

    1) Is it possible to write/code my own software to interface with the EMS to display the outputs (i.e. water temper, boost pressure, air intake temp) to a windows GUI-type display? (say to integrate into a program like CentraFuse).

I don't need an instruction manual (not yet anyway), but a brief idea on how one would go about doing this.

    Thanks!

yeah its pretty easy, serial comms in delphi isnt hard at all, then its just a matter of prasing strings as they come in.

have you got a log file on what is coming in? send it too me i'll see what i can do.

yeah, it is pretty easy if you can get documentation on what is being sent over the line. A bit harder would be to reverse engineer what is being sent over the line, especially if you the communication is two way.

Frodo is working on some skinnable software for gauges. You'll be able to make a plugin for it that monitors your EMS

What is required to develop the plugin? Does it still require I log the serial as described above and develope the proper software/code? Thanks!
