  • Reverse engineering cam file...Proposal for $$

    Hi Guys,

I purchased one of those "speed camera warning" devices a while back, basically a gps reciever and a little beeper device, it connect to the PC to download a camera data file with all the camera locations and beeps when you are near a camera...

I then got a carpc and have no use for that clumsy crappy hardware, however they supply users with amazingly complete camera lists, but they are only available in their own format... I have been unable to get anything to read from that file to extract the coordinates...

I'd be willing to pay someone if they can reverse engineer the files and make a small converter for me to use this with freedrive/destinator...

anyone interested? send me your proposal through PM and if the price is right I can paypal you the money once you send me the first bit of the converted file, and then you can send me the app/script to convert. I prefer a standalone exe app with some simple gui to just load the file and it will right to another file in the appropriate FD format.

    Thanks for reading!

EDIT: attached are the 3 data files available. I think they are all the same format since you can choose which one to load. There is more data than just cameras names and positions... it would be interesting to be able to extract them to, I think it is just city names to allow you to choose what to import, althoguh I dont mind importing just eerything, it would be useful to maybe have an option to export to excel instead of straight to FD mode, and once in excel (i.e. csv with all data) I can select what to remove and export by myself to FD format.

Sorry bout that... the company is a Brazilian company... the website is www.skytrax.com.br but not much useful info...

The device afaik is made in brazil... if you open the site and click on the second link on the left you will go t the product page, where there is a picture...

basically it consist of a GPS antenna, that plugs in to a somewhat large cigarette lighter plug which goes into the cigarette lighter... there are a couple of leds on the sigarette lighter plug, and 2 buttons, one to add and one to remove "trouble spots" (i.e. cams)...

There is a serial/usb wire that connects to the computer and to the cigarette lighter thingy and allows you to upload data from said file into the device.

I cant find the software to download on the site and dont have it on this computer I have it in the office so I'll try and get some screenies of the program. The program allows you to open the data files, see the cameras, and add them or not to your device. It also allows you to grab and edit (nameing, adding speed, etc) to the cams that you manually added on the device itself.

the device has no display or anything lile that... only a power/gps indicator, and one that blinks when u are near a camera or just added a camera.

          Yeah right... I wish...

They are either really dumb, or just playing dumb (more likely).... they say they dont have the info that their unit uses "other technology", however one of the screens of the program does allow u to see a coordinate, but i'm lazy to copy one by one by hand... its over 100 cams!!!

100 would be the ones I'd be adding for my city center.... probably about 300 or 500 would be useful to have in areaas that I trvel, however those areas arent mapped! ridiculous I know.... we have satelite tv, cable tv, 10 different cell networks in the country and not even the whole state covered by maps!

                bumpo....... anyone?

                EDIT: Some more infos:

The uploader program can be downloaded from: http://www.skytrax.com.br/SkytraxV26.exe

The data files need to be in the following directory: c:\windows\system32\skytrax\ (the program itself will install several, data files which can be opened from the tree inside the program... I need only the Sao Paulo files converted, although it would be useful to have a script/proggy to convert any file.)

maybe you can read the COM port for data it is spitting out? although I think it will prolly initialize the unit with some data, not just write to it since the communication is bidirectional
