  • GPS data logger question?

This might need to be in hardware but its kind of both software hardware. Anyways, I looked around and all i see are pc bassed gps loggers. Has anyone thought of building a GPS data logger that would run when your car is on and store gps data only if the car is moving. Probably RS232 GPS would be the cheap way to do it.

The device would connect between the GPS and your carputer. The GPS data would pass through the device in real time and also store any movement onto the device for later playback. That way if you carputer software isn't running or even on you would still track your location. Then with hyerterminal, or a home brew program, you could read the stored data from the device. This would be a self contained device. Pretty much 2 rs232 drivers, power supply, pic chip and some flash memory say 64 megs.

I know ive seen this for the keyboard. It plugged into the ps2 port and logged all keyboard strokes. Then with a terminal program you typed something and all the keystrokes would be displayed.

It could track Car technicians without having your carputer on. Or if you let someone drive your car ( side note, i dont let anyone drive my car. i'm wierd like that. When your car is touchy you dont want someone doing the wrong thing )

Any thoughts, comments. Like stupid noob its been done. Or kewl idea.

    Edit: sweet 200 posts!

Good idea. I agree... I want a perfect GPS history always, even if my PC was off.

However, the "blue-tooth GPS logger" device would have to stay connected to the SATs to know if it is moving or not. This could possibly require too much current to avoid dead-car-battery problems.

I think they would need to make a "blue-tooth GPS logger" with a special power-down mode and a motion detector or ignition-connection to detect when to re-power-up.

I suppose you could take apart a logger and figure out how to turn it on/off via 12v acc.

Yah, it would need to be connected to the ignition for power on. You wouldn't want to track where it is when the car is off. Unless someone tows it away . Would bluetooth be the best way to do it? I have a USB GPS and I know some people have the RS232 style. I was thinking serial 232 would be the easiest to design.

So I guess I should for more info on bluetooth. I thought that it would make sense to be able to log and use it for navigation at the same time.

i believe that is what he is reffering to. i have one.

ive never had a chance to use the logging feature, and i personally dont use the delorme software because of its touch screen unfriendliness. ill have to try it and then connect it to my dads laptop where he has the street atlas software.

my personal experience with bt in a car sucks. you have to go to the desktop and connect manualy, because bt wont auto connect. i will be purchasing a usb or serial model soon.

I like the quote on there website:
"The Blue Logger exceeds all expectations!
Up till now I have been using Garmin…my experience thus far is Garmin is dead, long live DeLorme!!”
          - E. McKellar

They only have 2 GPS models! They must be really good to say garmin is dead.

Looks like my idea is already out there. But theres is bluetooth only and would still require some modding to get it to track when the car is on and possibly power from the car. It doesn't say if you can log and use it as a gps at the same time. It does say you can use it as a pda connection or laptop connection or both. But thats not the same as track logging and live pc use at the same time.

I guess no ones intrested in it.

If your BT logger is placed next to a BT-USB dongle in the car, it should work fine.
