  • What about Sonique as MP3 Player?

I was watching TechTV the other night at my girlfriend's house (much to her dismay, I might add) and I think it was on Call FOr Help....anyway they showed the Sonique player and it was visually kick ***.

    I'm downloading it now.

I seem to recall this being around for a while, but not so popular. Any particular reasons/bugs/fatalities I should know about?

When I tried it, it was the slowest slow that ever slowed. *shrugs*

    Maybe it's better now.

Sonique is way too much a wanna be winamp, but it just fails compared to the nullsoft effort. I must admit the eyecandy is alot nicer than winamp, but at the end of the day its the good sound and plugins that make winamp shine.

anyway winamp 3 should give the 'eyecandy' that ppl want!

I think there is an SDK to use it with other coding efforts, if your that way inclined....

Heh, I got mails for months on people flaming me when my review for sonique was associated with the sonique page at download.com. My feeling was that it had nice eyecandy, but the menu system was annoying, as well as it being slow. I haven't used it anytime recently, but my first few uses were enought to turn me off. This was also back in the times when a 5000 song playlist were virtually unheard of (and sonique took FOREVER to load it up, where as winamp took it in stride).

Sonique uses a fair bit more CPU than Winamp just for playing MP3s. Well, atleast the older versions did... So, for people with slower car players, please don't try it.... Winamp works fine on a P100 Sonique doesn't....

                    BEGIN RANT

hey, I _like_ being able to sort my playlist by artist, album, track number, length, track name, or whatever--without having to make a new playlist.

I also like that I can rip/burn CD's, and have the track info automatically downloaded and the ID3 tags set for me. I Like that skins that I can make can be of ANY size, shape, and setup.

I like that all I have to do to find all the music on my computer is click on "find music on my computer." I like that my music doesn't skip or freeze when I fire up programs.

                    I LOVE ANNABELLE THE SHEEP!

And I like that I only had to download ONE thing to do ALL of that. I'm sure winamp has plugins that will do most, if not all, of those things. But with RJB I don't have to search for, download, and configure anything after the initial installation.

                    END RANT

I used to use Sonique. The net streaming quality was MUCH MUCH better back then. Now they're probably about the same. But I stopped using Sonique because it has serious memory leak issues that didn't get fixed after several updates. Got tired of having to kill and restart Sonique every couple days because of mem leaks.
